CASTLE BROMWICH NEWS WROTE
Uphill Task For Coleshill

The uphill task facing Coleshill Town in the Midland Combination First Division was made crystal clear on Saturday when they gave an enthusiastic display against weakened champions Sutton Town, but lost 3-0 It was Coleshill 7th successive defeat and it leaves them pointless with only four goals for and 15 against.
Coleshill, with everything to gain and nothing to lose attacked from the start and wingers Gibbons and Whipps tormented the home defence, being supplied with plenty of passes from midfield. After 12 minutes Gibbons ended a great run down the left flank to cross to the far post for Whipps to head what looked to be a certain goal, but for the saving grace of Sutton keeper Ward, who brilliantly finger tipped the ball on to the crossbar. Seconds later Gibbons shot just over from 30 yards. Pugh began to threaten danger to Coleshill’s rearguard and Capper did well to save two smart headers from the tall striker. Whipps replied with a cross from the right which Ward just managed to hold and new full-back Page tried a long range shot which dipped just over the bar. Exchanges were fairly even near the interval with Whillock and Bennett working hard to repel eager Sutton attacks, but Coleshill had the last word of the half when they broke clear for Whipps to cross a great ball which beat Wood but Gibbons was robbed by Williams at the last minute and the visitors only reward was a fruitless corner. Sutton moved into top gear in the second half, Edwards scored in the 47th minute and from then on Coleshill were forced to give second best. Attacking strongly, Sutton threatened more goals and only determination in defence and some good saves by Capper kept them at bay until Pugh helped himself to two goals, both coming from simple but accurate build-ups that spread-eagled Coleshill’s defence.
