SUNDAY MERCURY WROTE
A match winning goal in the 53rd minute by Neil Brady gave Coleshill the points to stretch their unbeaten run to four league games. Coleshill took the lead after 53 minutes when a free-kick from Bennett found Seaton. His shot hit the post but Brady was on hand to supply the finishing touch. In a sensational finish Houghton almost scored with a long goal kick when his wind assisted kick was saved by Jones, under pressure from Brady.

COLESHILL CHRONICLE WROTE
Although Coleshill lost their third successive match at Christchurch, secretary Bernard Knight reports that they showed great improvement and if a couple of sharp shooting forwards can be acquired then the tide is expected to turn. Put into the lead by a goal by Gordon Letts, the Town held the upper hand until a harmless looking shot from centre forward Trowmans evaded goalkeeper Cooper to make the interval score 1-1. The heavier Christchurch side proved masters of the second half and goals from Morris and Trowmans pushed the Town to defeat. The men gaining the honours being John Clayton, Swainson and Pugh.

RECRUITING IN THE DISTRICT
ADDRESSES BY LORD NORTON
On Saturday recruiting meetings were held at Nether Whitacre and Kingsbury, the chief speakers being Lord Norton and Colonel W.R. Ludlow. Lord Norton said “England were not to be blamed for three-quarters of the world being in arms. The war was due to the mailed fist of a man who for thirty years had set nation against nation, his aim to first end England, then France and then Russia. It was the duty of every eligible man to respond to Lord Kitchener’s appeal. The Kingsbury rifle range should be utilised by all who wanted to become proficient in the use of a service rifle”. Colonel Ludlow appealed to the young men to enlist. The audience stood up and repeated after him a solemn undertaking and covenant to use their best endeavours to raise the necessary number.

THE GREAT WAR
Lord Kitchener’s appeal for more men has met with a splendid response throughout the country and Coleshill and District have contributed their quota to the ranks. Next week we will publish a list of all from this district who are now serving in the King’s Army or Navy. Recruiting sergeants Mr M.C.Blewitt and Inspector Tuckwell announced that the following had volunteered for Lord Kitchener’s new Army: Arthur Tranter, William Kimberley, Francis A Court, Thos White, B.Showell, J.W.Hastings, Jos. Hastings, E.G.Mailins, Harry Moss, William Moss, Arthur Sharrard, John Watson, Henry Nicholds, William Waite, Edward Keatley, Arthur Simmonds, Charles Mitchell, James McGrain and Ben Burrows. PC Garbett, stationed in Coleshill, has applied for permission to leave the police force so as to be able to join the British Army. Four young men were under a misapprehension as to the age and were not accepted on this account. Mr Blewitt, with his car, and several other cars from Birmingham, conveyed the recuits to Birmingham and there was an animated scene on Church Hill prior to departure. The Coleshill Band was in attendance and played patriotic airs and then marched with the cars in procession down the hill as far as Cole End.
