Hard Task But Mile Oak Give Creditable Show

Mile Oak could not have had a harder task, for their second Midland Combination Second Division game than to play Champions Coleshill Town, but despite being under pressure for long periods they gave a creditable performance and were within two minutes of creating a surprise. Shortly before the kick-off, Rovers recieved a shock when full back Glyn Lloyd was taken to hospital with a septic foot. Town enjoyed territorial advantage, but seldom looked dangerous against a resolute Mile Oak defence, in which goal keeper Pete Goddard and centre half Bob Croome were outstanding. Rovers first dangerous move came midway through the first half, when Harold Mortimer and Tony Cure combined well, but the ball was cleared. It was the same two players who enabled Mile Oak to go ahead, after 31 minutes. A perfectly placed pass by Mortimer found Cure speeding through and the centre forward expertly lobbed the ball over the advancing keeper Peter Garnell, into an empty net. Six minutes later it was the thoughtful Mortimer who paved an opening for left winger John Bassett to add a second goal. Rovers threatened danger early in the second half, but Town's hard physical style of play enabled them to gain control and after 56 minutes a header off the line by Ron Llewellyn prevented the homesters from scoring. Coleshill applied pressure but a succession of corners were fruitless. In the 73rd minute, however, Town's Colin Davis was bundled off the ball, in the penalty area and Roy Phelps scored from the spot kick, at the second attempt. With two minutes remaining, Phelps was again to the fore, cleverly creating an opening for Davis to equalise.
