MATCH REPORT
Coleshill’s record breaking FA Trophy run reached a climax with a fine 5-2 win over Matlock Town but with the arrival of Level 2 Telford United at Pack Meadow for Round Two another win was unlikely but no one predicted a night of horrors and a record breaking defeat.
With Covid 19 restrictions dictating no spectators at Pack Meadow, there was an opportunity to transfer the game to Telford who were allowed a small crowd under a different level of lockdown but the Town management decided that bringing United to Pack Meadow was the best chance of a result.
Telford showed their quality from the off and never let up with Coleshill rarely causing the visitors any problems.
The Bucks had already had a couple of chances before they took the lead on just 7 minutes when Man Of The Match Dominic McHale scored direct from a free kick from 25 yards. Not a perfect start for the Colemen but it got a whole lot worse on the quarter hour mark when Taylor Carter-Byrne sliced a clearance straight to centre forward Williams who was then pulled back by Shay Palmer when clear on goal leaving the referee no alternative but to show a Red Card. To add insult to injury Williams scored direct from the free kick. 17 minutes on the clock, 2-0 and a man down, it’s going to be a long night. On 20 minutes full back Vaughan sent over a cross from the right wing, yes a cross, which evaded the Town defence and wrong footed keeper Paul Hathaway, hit the far post and went in. Could it get any worse. Well yes, further goals by McHale, Hardy and McHale again on the stroke of half time meant it was 6-0 at the break.

With nothing to lose Coleshill started brightly in the second half and were rewarded with their one and only goal. The United defence were caught cold as a long throw found it’s way to the far post and Gio Dainty flicked it into the net. Kai Tonge’s pace got him clear of the visitors defence but was brought back for a minor offence, really Referee, you do know it’s 6-1! Town competed well until the hour mark but when Hardy scored number seven heads went down and the final whistle couldn’t come quick enough. Byrne scored on 72 minutes for eight, Jones on 80 minutes for nine and Williams completed the rout in the last minute.
Coleshill had done so well to get this far in the Trophy following another depleted season due to Covid and didn’t deserve this embarrassment but Telford were a class above and fully deserved the emphatic win.
