Second half goals from Gio Dainty and Max Brogan condemned Biggleswade FC to another defeat at Pack Meadow on Monday evening.

Whilst disappointing to lose once more, this was a much-improved display from an FC side still absolutely decimated by injuries. There was little to choose between the teams for long periods of this encounter and it took a special free-kick from the young substitute Brogan to put the game beyond us.

The FC management team made four changes to the side that lost at home to Kidlington last time out. Michael Simpson returned in place of the unavailable Adam Hunt, Adam Drakulic was handed a rare start in a change of shape for the visitors, whilst new Work Experience signings from Stevenage FC Sam Dreyer and Alfie Williams came straight into the starting XI.

With both teams occupying two of the bottom three places before kick off, it was perhaps no surprise that chances were at a premium in a goalless first period.

The visitors had their moments though and played the better football without working the home keeper Paul Hathaway a great deal. Kian Coles did however force a smart save out of the keeper on 3 minutes with a sweetly-struck free-kick.

Despite a confidence-boosting win at Wisbech in the FA Trophy at the weekend, it took The Colemen a good ten minutes to find their feet. Nathan George had to turn behind a teasing cross from the right-hand side before the resulting corner was headed just over.

Neither side were able to fashion too many opportunities until after the half hour mark when the hosts got their first attempt of the match on target. A long throw in from the right hand side was able to find its way to Danny Dubidat just outside the six-yard box, but he couldn't get enough power or direction on his header to trouble Tyler Josephs.

Three minutes later it was FC's turn to looking threatening with the tireless front pairing of George Bailey and Adam Drakulic combining for the latter to cut in on the edge of the box and shoot. The effort was well-struck, but the home defender was in the right place to make a brave and key block for his side.

After the break 17-year-old Alfie Williams, who had an impressively industrious debut for FC, drove just wide of the left-hand post following some good work from Drakulic once more and Kian Coles hit the side-netting with a shot as he got on the end of a decent pass from Michael Simpson.

FC's bright start to the second period continued soon after when George Bailey brought a fine save out of Hathaway with a dipping drive from just outside the box after he had been picked out by the skipper Tom Coles. Bailey went close again seconds later, driving just over from a short-corner routine.

Just as it had done in the first half, it took The Coleman a good ten minutes to get going again after the interval and young debutant Sam Dreyer did just enough to put off Daniel Tymon as he ghosted into the box to get on the end of a good cross from the right-hand side.

The hosts were asking questions again moments later when a good ball with the outside of the boot found Kai Tonge in behind Joe Gauge, but fortunately for the visitors his pull back across the box found no-one in a white shirt.

There was no such luck just before the hour mark though when Tonge made a telling contribution that would break the stalemate. The young FC backline had kept the gangly, pacey forward quiet up until this point, but he left Luke Oswick in his wake with a fine run down the right flank before getting his cross in. Dubidat wasn't able to apply the finish at the near post, but his efforts diverted the ball into the path of Gio Dainty who looped a header over Josephs from just outside the six-yard box.

The same combination came close to doubling the home advantage five minutes later when good trickery on the left this time from Tonge saw the cross only half-cleared and Dainty half-volleyed the loose ball over the cross bar.

With the match heading into its final twenty minutes, FC had a couple of half-chances. The first falling to Dreyer, who had a decent strike bravely blocked following some indecision in the home penalty area and then an inswinging free kick from fellow debutant Williams was diverted wide of the near post.

Even with a slender advantage, our more experienced hosts seemed intent on running the clock down at every opportunity rather than push for a second. A fine effort from distance from Barry Fitzharris did force a smart stop out of Josephs although it was at a comfortable height for the FC keeper.

FC continued to probe as time began to run out with substitutes Dom Mason and another debutant Mousa Jammeh combining before the former shot just wide of the near post, but it was The Colemen who made the game safe a minute from time.

Nathan George was penalised for a foul on goalscorer Dainty on the edge of his own box and from the resulting free-kick young substitute Max Brogan whipped a special free-kick over the wall and into the net leaving Josephs with no chance.

On the balance of play, the hosts just about deserved their victory, but the visitors went home disappointed not to have more to show for their spirited efforts. This latest reverse leaves us languishes second from bottom after five games, but it is still very early days.

There were plenty of positives, including the two Stevenage lads who didn't look out of place having only joined earlier in the day and with some injured personnel not a million miles away from a return, it is far from doom and gloom.
