Deano On The Double As Rovers Win With 3

Rovers winless 3-game was halted with a convincing home win against visitors Coleshill Town. Manager Tony Fontanelle shuffled the pack following some indifferent recent performances, notably pairing the returning Kai Phelan at centre-back with Lewis Thomas and starting another youth product Jay Palmer at right-back. Their was an immediate urgency about the Rovers play with left-winger Connor Furlong clean through on goal after 4 minutes his finish however didn’t match the lead-up work and was scuffed well wide of a post. A long-range Charlie Smith effort sailed way over the bar before a Furlong shot was blocked for a corner with just 15 minutes on the clock. Rovers keeper Niall Cooper kept the score-sheet blank on 18 minutes finger-tipping a Coleshill header from a free-kick over his bar. Phelan might have opened the scoring on 19 minutes when his fine header from a corner was cleared off the Coleshill goal-line. Rovers striker Connor Vincent looked to have headed Rovers in front when he met a Victor Osobu cross after 27 minutes but Coleshill keeper Paul Hathaway produced the save of the match to deny him an opening goal. Thomas made a great run to head a Smith free-kick goal-wards after 30 minutes but his effort just cleared the bar. Cooper was called into action again and did well to foil Coleshill striker Nehemia Zazi with a smothering save at his feet when he looked like scoring. The breakthrough goal for Rovers finally came with 37 minutes gone when a flowing move down the right saw Osobu send in a cracker of a far post cross which midfielder Dean Dummett headed powerfully home. Right on half-time, Rovers were gifted a second score when a horrendous mix-up at the heart of the Coleshill defence left striker Goldy Capela with the easiest of opportunities and he lobbed home to double the home side’s lead at the interval.
Rovers started the second half on the front foot and, within two minutes of the restart all but ended this match as a contest when Dummett scored his second goal on the day with a fine right-foot shot. Capela had a chance to add to his tally but fired over from a clever Vincent pass after 59 minutes. Coleshill right-winger Josh Webb had a shot comfortably saved by Cooper before his team-mate Joe Halsall also saw his effort go straight into the home keeper’s hands. There was still time for Capela to crack one against the bar and for Furlong to see his shot comfortably saved by the visiting keeper before the full-time whistle sounded. What a difference a few days makes, Rovers were good in all areas of the pitch in this match with the defensive cover from midfield a real improvement and a special mention to the two young centre-backs Thomas and Phelan who looked as if they’d played together for years rather than in their first match together.
