MATCH REPORT

Coleshill have played Sutton Coldfield Town a few times over the years, mainly in pre-season friendlies and the occasional Birmingham Senior Cup match, notably an 11-0 defeat back in 2011. But this is the first time the two sides have met in a League game, as far as I know, with Sutton traditionally two or even three leagues above Coleshill. It's an indication of how far the Colemen have come over the last four years.

Both sides, for different reasons, will concentrate on League games this season with a League Challenge Cup game a bit of a distraction. Coleshill weren't at full strength but not far off with Matt Coton and Nathan Waite making their debuts. Sutton fielded a very young side three of which are on a season long loan from Birmingham City.

What followed was a very entertaining, frantic, end to end game that amazingly only had two goals over the 90 minutes. Josh Webb had the first chance for Coleshill after a one-two with Liam Molesworth but his shot was well saved by Hopkins and then Joe Halsall pulled a shot wide from a great position. In reply Letford made strides into the box but his effort was well saved by Matt Coton. Town had started on top but Sutton were coming more into the game and Dawes hit a great effort from 22 yards that hit the corner of post and bar. Coleshill finally got their noses in front two minutes before the break when a sweeping move ended with a cross by Josh Webb that came off a defender, hit the post, trickled along the line, before captain Joe Halsall forced the ball over the line.

McNulty started the action in the second half with a great shot from 22 yards that keeper Matt Coton did well to tip on to the bar and watched the ball bounce over. Ryan Edmunds had a shot cleared from the foot of the post and Nathan Waite headed over the bar before Sutton equalised on the hour mark. A free kick came into the home box which should have been cleared but when the ball was recycled Letford was on hand to tap into the net from a yard out. Sutton were having their best period but although their play was clever and swift the action in the final third was a let-down. Coleshill came back and two great chances fell to George Washbourne, the first flew over the bar and the second, on target, was saved by the keepers feet. And so to penalties.

Liam Molesworth scored first and Monaghan equalled. Connor Doyle scored next but Matt Coton saved Concannon's effort. George Washbourne had his spot kick saved and Steve palmer dragged his effort wide. Ryan Edmunds then casually dinked the ball straight down the middle with the keeper already diving. McNulty had to score to keep the tie alive but his effort was poor and Coleshill were through 3-1.

Sutton bow out of the Southern League Challenge Cup

Sutton fielded a much-changed side on Monday evening with many senior players making way for our juniors. There were some new faces in tonight’s game with Hopkins in goal, Reuben and McNulty.
Sutton were up against it straight from the off with Coleshill having a nice interplay between Webb and Molesworth; the shot was well saved by the goalkeeper. Sutton defended well in the first half with plenty of attacks from Coleshill; with Beresford at the heart of our defence they were quickly blocked out.
Ryan Edmunds was a terrier in attack and terrorised Sutton’s defence at every opportunity. Sutton’s Kieron Dawes had a couple of efforts on goal, one of which cannoned off the post. It was on 43 minutes when Coleshill broke Sutton’s hearts with a shot that hit the bar, rebounded, and then Joe Halsall was there to tap it over the line.
The early part of the second half was again a pretty even battle, this was where Sutton had their best spell of the game; it culminated with Sutton scoring the equalising goal. Palmers free kick was passed to McNulty whose chip to Letford was fired high into the net. A very well worked goal from Sutton. Letford later displayed his football skills with a mazy run which beat 3 or 4 of Coleshill’s players. He avoided several tackles before he was fouled just outside the box; the resulting free kick came to nothing.

Full Time 1 - 1

A draw was a fair result on the night, but there had to be a winner so it went to the lottery of the penalty shoot out to decide the final score. Sutton sadly lost 3:1 on penalties.

Doyle - Scored
Washbourne - Saved
