Hot Shot Brookes Is Highgate Hero

Highgate United's ace marksman marked his return to form with a display of personnel excellence in which he scored a hat trick to sink a below average Coleshill side on Boxing Day. Highgate, following a series of poor results, took the lead after 16 minutes when Pete Allbutt deceived Jordan and crossed for Phil Summerhill to head in at the far post. Johnny Brookes and Summerhill both had goal worthy efforts denied by keeper Howlins as Highgate took full control of play in the first half. Brookes weaved his way through the Coleshill defence on 38 minutes and completed a fine solo run by shooting through the legs of the advancing Howkins from eight yards. Brookes further increased the lead after 41 minutes when he headed in from Tony Donnelly's centre following more good work from Summerhill. Tony Watts created Highgate's fourth goal when he won the ball in midfield and sent Brookes clear to round Howkins and shoot into an empty net with the aid of a deflection from Foote. Donnelly tested Howkins with a fierce drive one minute later and then Coleshill had a lucky escape when Howlins dropped an Allbutt cross and smothered it on the line with the home players claiming the ball had entered the net. Coleshill came more into the game in the second half but their efforts were largely backed by enthusiasm rather than skill. When the visitors did manage to break through the found Highgate's back four of Roddy Hemphill, Mickey Knight, Steve Bates and Peter Smith in top form and keeper Geof Wiggins was hardly troubled. Coleshill's Cooke was booked after tripping Allbutt after 76 minutes. Highgate had two further chances to increase the lead in the space of a minute, firstly when Dave Evans' corner was palmed over the bar by Howkins and then when Brookes headed against the post from another corner from the same player.
