SUNDAY MERCURY WROTE
It's Stratford Under Siege

Stratford, the Midland Combination Division One League Leaders, had to fight for their lives against a spirited Coleshill fight back in this F.A.Vase clash. Stratford looked to be cruising when they went 2-0 up through goals from Keith Jones and Keith Hancock. But the picture changed when Dyer pulled a goal back for Coleshill with a fierce shot from 25 yards and in the second half, after missing chances, Stratford were put under severe pressure.

THE STRATFORD UPON AVON HERALD WROTE
Town Go Marching On

Stratford Town went through to the Preliminary round at home to Rushall Olympic when the beat Coleshill Town in a tight game in which they had to suffer a few anxious moments. The game was a good cup tie and the fact that there were no more goals was due not only to missed chances but also to some superb goalkeeping. Stratford had the ideal start when after just five minutes, Coleshill’s goalkeeper Collins, was penalised for time wasting. The in-direct free kick was rolled by Eamonn O’Loughlin for Keith Jones to shoot past the wall and into the corner of the net. McGuire missed a good chance to equalise when he headed over the bar but Stratford pushed forward again and following a corner Collins made a fine save when he managed to tip over a Whitehouse header for another flag kick. The corner was taken by Jones from the right and reached Keith Hancock on the edge of the penalty area. He made it 2-0 with a fierce volley which went in off the post. Stratford appeared to be cruising but Lee Spencer foiled another effort by McGuire with a superb diving save. Bob Dyer put Coleshill back into the game after 36 minutes with a tremendous left foot shot from outside the penalty area which swerved into the top angle of the net although Lee Spencer did manage to get a hand to it. Just before the break Hemming had a chance to level the score but after beating Spencer to a cross he headed over. Coleshill were subjected to a period of heavy pressure by Stratford in the opening 20 minutes of the second half and several chances were created the best of which was when Ulwatt pushed forward to have a good heading opportunity from eight yards, unfortunately he headed straight at the goalkeeper. Coleshill mounted a last ditch effort to force the game into extra time but Spencer kept out shots from Dyer and Richardson. In the closing seconds he did very well when he flung himself across the goal to push away a fierce shot from Barrows. All credit must go to Stratford who perhaps did not put together one of their most convincing performances but their determination to win still shone through and gave them the impetus to get through to the next round.

Stratford's Manager Sid Keenan was philosophical after Saturday's home game with Coleshill Town. It was a disappointing performance from Town, who had just been awarded their trophy for BRMB's Team Of The Month. "We didn't play very well", Sid said, "We managed a win by nicking a couple of goals early on and managing to hang on". But it was still a win for Stratford, stretching their unbeaten run this season. It also suggests that Stratford may have a good cup run ahead of them.

Coleshill were first eligible for entry into the FA Vase in 1975/76 season. They lost their first ever game in the competition 1-0 to Bermuda WMC. Their first win came the next season when they beat Solihull Borough 2-1.
