SUNDAY MERCURY WROTE
Rampant Rathbone Keeps Town In Hunt

Hot-Shot Dean Rathbone struck twice as Coleshill Town edged out visitors Highgate United 2-1 to stay second in the table behind Westfields. But they had to battle for the points against a determined Highgate who played more than an hour with ten men. The red card came on 29 minutes, Aaron Brown being sent off after his last man challenge and Rathbone fired in the resulting penalty. But the visitors rallied and were back on level terms by the interval thanks to a Josh Hawker effort from just outside the box. That was how it remained until the 75th minute when Rathbone fired in the winner from close range.

REPORT
By Craig Hamilton

Coleshill came up against their biggest rivals lying second in the league but it was Highgate that had the first chance after only two minutes when Manning found himself free in the box only for home keeper Paul Hathaway to make a good save. Coleshill's first attempt came shortly after when Andre Gonzales ran through but shot wide from the edge of the area. Reece Leek then put a good pass through the Highgate defence but Luke Barlone's cross-shot was missed at the far post by Jordan Nadat. Then Corey Currithers put a header wide from another Gonzales cross. Highgate were not out of the game though and a 25 yard free kick from Rickards was saved by Hathaway. Then Coleshill took the lead on 24 minutes when a long clearance by Hathaway was headed on by Barlone for Nadat to run on to but he was pulled down by Arron Brown which resulted in a red card and a penalty for Coleshill, up stepped Dean Rathbone to fire the ball into the bottom corner 1-0. However, this seemed to spur on Highgate and Lei Brown had a goalbound header tipped over the bar by Hathaway. It was now end to end football as first Gavin Hurren for Coleshill saw a header hit the post then Hawker had a free kick blocked for Highgate. It didn't appear that Highgate only had ten men as Hawker then scored an equaliser on 40 minutes as a long free kick was headed back across goal and he had an easy tap in from six yards.
Half time 1-1.

The first chance of the second half went to Coleshill when Barlone played the ball into Josh Quaynor and his shot was cleared but only back to Barlone who squared the ball to Rathbone but he shot over from 12 yards out. Despite being a man short, Highgate competed well and had a chance from a free kick but the danger was cleared by the Coleshill defence. Then Tom Weale, on as a half time substitute, saw a 30 yard free kick heading for the top corner brilliantly saved by Bunn in the Highgate goal. Highgate then had another chance from a free kick but again couldn't get past theColeshill defence. It was no surprise that the 10 men of Highgate started to tire after all their hard work and Coleshill capitalised on this on 72 minutes when a good run through the midfield by Rathbone paid dividends as he passed to Nadat who controlled the ball, held off the defender and played the ball across the six yard box for Barlone to shoot. His shot was blocked on the line but Rathbone had continued his run into the box and netted the rebound, 2-1. It was becoming all Coleshill now and they had several more chances to make the game safe but couldn't convert their chances and the game ended 2-1.
Fair play to Highgate for never giving up and making it a good, entertaining, end to end game.

A VIEW FROM THE OTHER SIDE

RATHBONE BRACE FIRES UP COLEMEN
By Neville Sawyer

Josh Hawker's first half goal was not enough to prevent ten men Highgate falling to another defeat on their travels.

Dean Rathbone's brace condemned Highgate to yet another league defeat , but this was a far better performance than of late from Ashley Pulisciano's side which faced an uphill struggle following the 24th minute sending off of Aaron Brown for a tug on Jordan Nadat's shirt in the box. Josh Hawker equalised the resulting penalty five minutes before the break but despite a spirited display Gate were unable to prevent Rathbone scoring what proved to be a 72nd minute winner. The defeat was harsh on a Gate side which made Coleshill work hard for their win but ultimately the home team had too much in the locker with the visitors failing in their late search for a second equaliser. As with the defeat at top six Quorn the hosts appear to be somewhat flattered by their second spot in the league table and judging by the performances of other sides around them near the bottom surely it won't be long before Gate's fortunes take a turn for the better. Again though there were enforced changes to the line up, Nathan Corry making a loan move to Knowle, Ashley Buswell trying his luck at Studley, Emmitt Delfeuneso signing for Rugby Town and Karl King and Sam Smith both on holiday. Tom Lacey returned at left full back with Aaron Brown accompanying Scott Turner at the heart of defence. Straight from the kick off Brendon Bunn saved low down from Nadat, Gate too looking for an early breakthrough when from Lei Brown's header Marco Adaggio played the ball wide for McCauley Manning to cut inside and win a first corner of the game off Paul Hathaway's gloves. A strong Andre Gonzales run ended with a shot fizzed past Bunn's right hand post, Aaron Brown then cutting out a dangerous Reece Leek cross. Lei Brown controlled Aaron Brown's long ball out of defence on his chest despatching a first time volley narrowly wide, but Town looked the more threatening going forward Giovanni Dainty high over the bar from twenty five yards and Luke Barlone's ball over the face of goal just beyond the reach of Nadat. Turner back pedalled to head a long clearance away from Nadat then rose to beat Barlone in the air. Neat interplay between Lei Brown and Adaggio set up Manning for a half chance dragged off target, Manning then serving Adaggio for a shot on the turn saved by Hathaway at the keeper's left hand post. Connor Mooney was careless with a volley hit high and wide and with Scott Rickards pulling strings in midfield there was little to choose between the two sides, that is until 24th minute. Rickards had previously driven a thirty yard free kick into Hathaway's midriff, and it was from a quick break and burst through from Nadat that Aaron Brown was red carded for tugging the forward in the box. Rathbone made no mistake from the resulting penalty with Gate forced into a reshuffle of the ten men. Hathaway did well to palm a Lei Brown header off Dale Taylor's free kick over the bar, but there was to be a let off at the other end when home centre half Gavin Hurren's header came back off the woodwork. By the half hour mark Coleshill were making the most of the man advantage and enjoying a good spell of pressure, Barlone twice directing headers wide. Gate though were defending well, Hawker perfectly positioned to clear a low cross at the foot of the upright and Bunn turning Corey Currither's effort round the post. Despite being on the back foot for long periods and failing to make progress up front with five minutes of the half remaining Gate were to find themselves on level terms. Turner forsook his defensive duties to head Rickards'' free kick back into the penalty box Hawker reacting to fire home at close range. The goal was some reward for what had been a determined display and things were close to getting better when both Adaggio and Manning brought good saves out of Hathaway, the sides going in at the break on a goal apiece, Coleshill left to rue the missing of several half chances and Gate grateful for having made the most of their best chance of the half

H-T Coleshill Town 1 v 1 Highgate United.

The second half began with Lei Brown's header only just failing to put Manning in the clear, whilst at the other end Bunn did well to keep out a Nadat attempt although the whistle had already blown for an offence, Lacey's persistence in halting Leek in his tracks earning a goal kick. Turner got a crucial header to clear Thomas Weale's cross with blue shirts queuing up at the far post, Rathbone then squandering a gilt edged opportunity when firing over the bar from just a couple of yards distance. Manning dispossessed full back Gonzales to put Lei Brown away the cross tempting but too far ahead of Adaggio. Gate were far from being over run and still a threat on the counter attack, Adaggio's glancing header not far off target. Bunn produced an outstanding save to deny Weale, but with Hawker, Lacey and Taylor sweeping up behind the outstanding Turner chances were by now proving few and far between. A foul on Lei Brown led to Isaac Jagroop's free kick being charged down and Mooney's follow up volley held by Hathaway, but some nice visitor's build up play was all too often let down by a poor final pass. Lei Brown tested Hathaway with a header off Mooney's cross but in 72nd minute Gate were caught on the break to find themselves behind for a second time, Nadat finding Rathbone in a crowded goalmouth to force the loose ball over the line. Gate came on strongly late on, Lei Brown heading behind and Hathaway snatching Hawker's long ball off Jagroop's head. Although Town's substitute Demetrius Smikle struck the wood work Gate continued to go in search of what was to prove an elusive equaliser with Lacey's four yard volley deflected behind and Hathaway saving from Jagroop at the second attempt.
