MATCH REPORT
By Craig Hamilton.

On a cold and wet day Coleshill Town hosted mid-table Walsall Wood hoping to improve on their league form. However, it was Walsall Wood that had the first real attack on 4 minutes when good play down the left saw Currithers pass inside to Butlin who laid the ball back for Aiton but his shot went well wide from 20 yards. Coleshill started to get into the game and a good pass down the right wing found Weller in space but his cross pulled across the box was missed by everyone, however Walsall Wood failed to clear the ball but the on-rushing Hughes shot wide on 6 minutes. Coleshill started to get on top and only two minutes later a good through ball found Barlone in the middle of the area but Evans, in the Walsall Wood goal, pushed the ball around the post for the first corner but again Walsall defended well and cleared the ball. Good play down Coleshill's left wing saw Quaynor beat a player then play a couple of one-two's to put him clear on goal but from 8 yards he shot wide of the far post. Ten minutes gone and still no score. That looked likely to change when a long ball out of defence was held up by Barlone who turned the centre half but again the shot was wide. Walsall started to get back into the game and on 20 minutes they won the ball in midfield and played a pass through the Coleshill defence that was missed by Luke Edwards but Walsall could not capitalise on the slip and the danger was cleared. It was nip and tuck with chances at both ends but first Hughes for Coleshill shot wide and then Griffiths had a long range shot go over the bar for Walsall Wood. On 34 minutes Wood had the chance to take the lead when a penalty was awarded for a push in the back of the forward as Evans chased a loose ball into the penalty area. Up stepped Currithers but Hathaway dived to his right to save and then saved the rebound from the same player, the defence then clearing the ball. Rathbone then had the chance of the half when he won the ball in the centre circle and ran through the middle of the defence only to shoot wide from just inside the box.
Half-Time 0-0.

The second half started with Wood making the first attack when a good pass through the Coleshill defence had Aiton one on one with the keeper but again Hathaway saved the shot. The resulting corner was defended well and cleared away. Almost immediately Coleshill sent on Simeon Cobourne for Hughes and straight away he caused Walsall Wood problems getting the ball to feet and running at the defence. However it was Walsall Wood that started to play the ball on the slick wet surface but their good play did not result in any clear cut chances. Coleshill started to get a grip of Walsall's passing and Smikle was unlucky to see his 25 yard shot well saved by Evans in the Walsall Wood goal. Then Weller shot well over on 67 minutes after the ball was played inside to him by Evans. That was his last action of the game as two minutes later he was replaced by Reece Leek. Cobourne was now posing all sorts of problems for Walsall Wood as they couldn't cope with his pace. A great run from the halfway line saw him run all the way through the middle but again the shot was dragged wide from 18 yards. Coleshill then sent on Luke Chapman for his debut, replacing Barlone and he got into the game with good play down the left to find Smikle who passed to Cobourne but again a good tackle by Wood stopped the danger. Walsall were not out of the game and had a chance when Currithers ran free down the left wing but Evans held him up and his shot was blocked. However Aiton followed up only to see his shot cleared off the line by Edwards. As the 90 minutes approached, another mazey run by Cobourne was stopped by a last ditch tackle but the resultant corner was headed over the bar by Smikle. It looked like the game was heading for a 0-0 draw but into the 2nd minute of injury time Coleshill won a corner on the right. The keeper tried to punch it clear but it only went to the feet of Chapman who controlled the ball and shot into the back of the net from 12 yards, and as soon as the kick off was taken the referee blew for the end of the game. Walsall Wood can feel very unlucky as over the game a draw looked a fairer result.

Best wishes go to two injured players. Walsall Wood's Butlin who left the field with a facial injury just before half time, and Coleshill's Guy Clarke who has a broken elbow. Hope you both have a speedy recovery!

WOOD'S GOOD RUN HALTED AT COLESHILL TOWN

By The Wood

A goal by substitute Luke Chapman 3 minutes into injury time robbed Wood of the point their performance deserved. Town keeper Paul Hathaway saved a 34th minutes penalty to keep the game goal-less at half-time, it proved pivotal in the end.
Against the run of play it was Wood who threatened first, Corey Currithers cutting inside from wide left, playing a ball across the face of the box, Joey Butlin flicked the ball right into the path of Drew Aiton to drill a first time low drive narrowly wide of the right hand post.
The reply was almost instant, Chris Hughes playing the ball out wide right to pick out Leon Weller, his vicious low cross inches in front of Luke Barlone sliding in at pace. A minute later it was Weller powering through the centre putting Hughes clear to race into the right of the box, his low near post drive saved at full stretch by keeper Lee Evans. From the corner the ball was played out to Luke Edwards to hit first time, Craig Deakin with a brave block. 3 minutes later Josh Quaynor was released into the left of the box to fire a cross shot wide.

A minute later a long clearance from Evans saw Dan Griffiths capitalise on a defensive slip and race into the left of the box, his low drive pushed away by keeper Paul Hathaway, Lewis Taylor Boyce fired in the loose ball first time, Hathaway making a full length save.
21 minutes gone, Quaynor raced clear wide left, his near post cross volleyed just wide by Hughes. 5 minutes later Weller was put clear wide right, his low cross flying across the face of the 6 yard box. It was Weller again crossing from the right 2 minutes later, Hughes volleyed the ball goalwards Evans somehow keeping the ball out, it ricocheted off defender Luke Wright and away to safety.
A lovely incisive move down the Wood left on 34 minutes saw Steven Hayles play the ball forward to Butlin who immediately put Currithers racing into the left of the box, only for him to be pushed in the back, the referee gave a penalty. Up stepped Drew Aiton, keeper Hathaway saving low to his right, a melee developed from the loose ball, another penalty shout was ignored by the referee and the ball somehow stayed out.
A minute later Butlin lost 2 front teeth when he copped a kick in the mouth and left the field to be replaced by Luke Delaney.
Then on 37 minutes Dean Rathbone won the ball on halfway and powered forward into the box, his low drive bouncing off the outside of the left hand post.
3 minutes into the second half a ball over the top of the home defence saw Aiton first to the ball, his chip over the advancing Hathaway bringing a great save from the keeper to fingertip the ball away.
Back to the other end, a long clearance bounced forwards, Evans racing from his area to kick clear from Hughes. On 56 minutes Evans (Robert) found the ever dangerous Weller wide right he cut into the box, his low drive pushed round the post by Evans at full stretch.
For the next 30 minutes both sides went looking for the breakthrough but neither side could get the all-important goal. Wood looked to have won it on 85 minutes, a lovely flowing move ending with Currithers racing onto a ball into the left of the box and firing the ball past the advancing Hathaway who just slowed the ball down enough for Edwards to calmly clear the ball off the line.
3 minutes into injury time a right wing corner was delivered to the near post and was only partially cleared, substitute Luke Chapman volleying the ball home from close range.
Wood deserved at least a point, as Town had the most of the ball but Paul Hathaway was the busier of the 2 keepers, so a draw would have been a fair result.
Its 10 days off now for Wood before their next game, which is against Stoke City at the Wood on Tuesday 3rd November. Here’s hoping for a change of fortune.
Bill Shaw.
