SUNDAY MERCURY WROTE
Town Have Dreams Dashed By Dunston
Coleshill Town's FA Vase odyssey came to a heart breaking end with a 2-1 extra time defeat at Dunston UTS. After a goalless first half, the Gateshead hosts took the lead when Stephen Goddard headed home a corner from the right on 54 minutes. But with time ticking away, Matt Brown poked home Town's equaliser from a goalmouth scramble after Dunston twice failed to clear, to secure an extra 30 minutes. However, the hosts weren't to be denied and won the tie when Dale Burrell was left unmarked to head home nine minutes into the added spell. Coleshill's Danny Douglas was dismissed for a late tackle at the end of the 120 minutes.

THE NON-LEAGUE PAPER WROTE
Dunston Check In To Fifth Round
Dunston UTS, FA Vase winners in 2012, neede an extra-time goal to book their place in the fifth round. After a goalless first half, in which Ryan Nash came closest in the 23rd minute, forcing a good save for the visitors, Dunston took the lead seven minutes after the restart. Lee McAndrew crossed and Stephen Goddard headed the hosts in front and the Northern League side looked set to reach the last 16 within 90 minutes. Mathew Brown, however, pounced deep in injury time punishing the Gateshead side after they failed to clear their lines. The Colts began the first half of extra-time on top but it was Dunston who hit the winner, Andy Bulford crossing for Dale Burrell to head home in the 101st minute.
Star Man: Lee McAndrew (Dunston)

THE PERFECT GAME - WELL NEARLY!
Coleshill Town had a plan to progress in the FA Vase and it came ever so close to working perfectly!

When you play a team of Dunston's pedigree you can't go gung-ho! A team that have won the Vase, 2012, a team with experience, 43 year old ex-pro at centre half who was an absolute tower, a team with talent and a budget several times that of their opponents! So Coleshill started with a 4-5-1 formation and restricted the home side to very few chances and by half time, at 0-0, the plan was working. Town had a blip at the start of the second half and conceded a goal but they slowly started to get the upper hand and when they introduced Chris Gumery and Chris Lloyd to the fray, and went 4-4-2, they forced Dunston into a change of formation themselves. The UTS management took off their two best forwards, and switched to just one up front in an effort to keep what they had! Matt Brown got a deserved equaliser with the last kick of the ninety minutes and at this point, with Dunston having played their cards, Coleshill looked the more likely to go on to win the game. The home team got their noses back in front but it was a midfield runner that scored the eventual winner and then they shut up shop and ran out deserved winners but Coleshill can be so proud of their efforts!

There was a great atmosphere at the UTS Stadium with good banter between rival supporters but Coleshill won the singing contest. The pitch was barely playable and cut up very quickly, fair play to both sides for putting on a spectacle. Neither keeper was unduly bothered in a tough but even first 45 minutes. Ryan Nash had a curling shot tipped over the bar by home keeper Liam Connell who was commanding throughout. Dunston's best chances were coming from Lee McAndrew who was the best player on the park.

Dunston started better in the second half, Johnny Wightman hit the side netting and McAndrew hit the foot of the post before the Gateshead side took the lead on 54 minutes. McAndrew swung in a corner and Stephen Goddard nodded home from inside the six yard box. Wightman again hit the side netting from a great position as Coleshill stuttered, but slowly they gathered their composure and worked their way back into the game. Danny Tymon had the ball in the net but play was brought back for a foul. A series of yellow cards were shown as both sides showed total commitment. McAndrew cut inside and had a great shot well saved by Paul Hathaway, the rebound fell to Dale Burrell but he sent a great chance well over the bar. Into the last 15 minutes and Coleshill were still in the game Matt Brown had a shot saved by Connell, then Dean Rathbone combined with Chris Lloyd who crossed for Brown who again was denied by Connell but was getting closer. Chris Gumery was next to feed Brown and his shot looked to be sneaking in at the foot of the post until Connell grasped at full stretch. Town pinned the home team in their own box with seconds to go and finally the break through came as Brown found the net through a sea of bodies.

There was little to choose between the teams in extra time but the crucial moment came on 101 minutes. Substitute Andy Bulford got to the bye line but was prevented from crossing with his right foot by Luke Edwards. Bulford turned back and tried again with his left and his cross into the danger area was met by the onrushing Burrell who planted a firm header into the net. Coleshill went for broke but couldn't break down a solid home defence, a Brown header from a Rathbone free kick the closest they came. With time running out, and everyone pushing forward Coleshill were caught out on the break and lone defender Danny Douglas took his man out and was given his marching orders!

End of the dream but the beginning of a new era for Coleshill! I can only see the club going one way and that way is up! Bring on more moments like this, it's what Non-League football is all about!

AND FINALLY - A VIEW FROM THE OTHER SIDE
A match report taken from Dunston UTS web site
Dunston have to put in an extra shift in against the Colemen....
By Tom Clark
Dunston welcomed Coleshill Town FC of the Midland Football Alliance League first Division to the UTS Stadium for the FA Vase Round 4 fixture. The statistics for the teams in their respective leagues are identical with both teams having played 25 games won 11 and drawn 8 and scoring over 50 goals this season. With both sides being in good form it promised to be a competitive game and Dunston had a full squad of players to select from as Liam Connell had recovered from his ankle injury which caused him to be substituted last week, Andrew Bulford continuing his rehabilitation after is operation was included on the bench and a Lee McAndrew was fit enough to take his place on the left wing.

Coleshill started from the whistle and their tactics were to test the Dunston defence with long through ball for their prolific scorer Matt Brown to take on but the defence were alert and stood firm, Dunston steadily worked their way into the game on a muddy stick pitch. McAndrew was instrumental in his runs against Weller a very quick and alert right full back in what promised to be an interesting battle for the whole game. In the first half Dunston created the better opportunities although Coleshill were continually responding and keeping the Dunston defence on their toes but neither side were able to make the breakthrough. Both sides continued the battle in the second half with the sticky pitch still having a big effect on the play and on 52 minutes Dunston were rewarded with for their attacking efforts as they forced a corner which was taken by McAndrew and found Goddard at the front post and his positive header entered the net. The game continued, Dunston looking for a second and Coleshill introduced another forward in Chris Gummery to further test the Dunston defence. In the last 20 minutes Coleshill were still strong and forcing the Dunston defence to hold strong, Dunston replaced the hard working forwards, Goddard for Bulford and Wightman for Ormston to strengthen their midfield as errors and passes from the tired players from both teams due to the heavy surface. As the game entered additional time Coleshill were still pushing for the equaliser, with both teams having forced saves from the goalkeepers especially a tremendous double save by Connell on 80 minutes,. In the fourth minute of additional time Coleshill attacked through Gummery down the right flank, getting to the by line an forcing a low cross into the congested 6 yard box, Dunston failed to clear it and when the ball fell to Matt Brown he was able to force it home past a despondent defence. From the kick off the referee immediately ended the half so it went to extra time.

Dunston to their credit responded positively and took the game back to Coleshill and in the 100th minute Bulford received a ball but was forced wide by the Coleshill defence, he controlled the ball and put in a cross to the back post were Dale Burrell met it with a positive header downwards and into the net past the despairing defence. Once again Coleshill took the game to Dunston, but Dunston held solid and looked more likely to get another goal. On 119 minutes, Lee McAndrew was again played into the Coleshill half by Ormston but the centre half, Douglas in a desperate effort dived in and fouled him and was immediately sent from the field of play. The game then ended with Dunston as winners but knowing they had beaten a very good team whom had tested Dunston right up to the end.

Coleshill tested the Dunston defence from the kick off as a long ball was put through for Brown to chase but Connell was alert and collected it, a minute later Brown was again played in from a through ball but Cattanach matched Brown and cleared the ball. Dunston attacked down the right wing on 10 minutes through Mc Andrew who forced a corner. A minute later Wightman was played through by Craggs but Hathaway in the Coleshill goal collected. On 15, Kirby had a shot blocked, the rebound fell to Rathbone whose shot was collected by Connell. On 21, Ryan for Coleshill had a shot pushed over the bat by Connell. On 28 McAndrew had a shot parried by Hathaway and the ball evaded the Dunston forwards coming in. On 30, Ryan had a 25 yard shot go over the bar before McAndrew on 33 put in a cross which was headed out to Steven Shaw whose delayed shot went over the bar. On 39 minutes a left wing cross from Steven Shaw was cleared as far as Gary Shaw whose shot was blocked. On 39 Dale Burrell collected a ball and advanced into the box his low cross was only inches away from Wightman and went just wide of the far post.

Score at half time 0 - 0

The second half continued with Dunston attacking through Goddard breaking into the box and his pass to Wightman saw him shoot into the side netting On 47, Mc Andrew dribbled into the box past Weller and his shot to the near post was deflected for a corner by Hathaway. On 49, Rathbone advanced for Coleshill and his shot was deflected to Brown who was met by the alert Connell diving at his feet to collect. On 51 Goddard fed in Wightman whose shot was deflected for a corner, from the corner taken by McAndrew, was met by Goddard at the front post who headed home for the opening goal. Coleshill came back with Ryan beating Gary Shaw and shooting with Connell saving low down to his left. A minute later Wightman shot into the side netting with Goddard waiting for a cross. On 65 some good inter passing between Goddard and Steven Shaw was brought to a halt because Goddard was adjudged to be offside, Brown laid a ball off to Tymon whose shot went wide. On 73, McAndrew dribbled his way into the box and unleashed a shot which Hathaway parried and then cleared. On 76 McAndrew put in a cross which Wightman deflected onto Bulford whose header went just wide. On 79, Wightman dribbled into the box and his shot was saved by Hathaway. Dunston then seemed to be defending deeper and with Gummery leading the Coleshill line were pushing on and on 80 minutes Brown had a shot parried by Connell and as Gummery set himself to shoot from a yard out Connell recovered to smother the ball. On 84, Brown again dribbled into the box but Connell came out to save. Dunston were now having to defend and they did so until the 3rd minute of added on time when Gummery put in a low cross from the right wing by line, the Dunston defence failed to clear it and when the ball fell to Brown he forced it home for the equaliser. Immediately after the restart the referee blew the whistle for the end of normal play.

Score at full time 1 –1

In extra time, Dunston retained their composure and attacked the Coleshill goal as the ball was laid back to Craggs whose shot was blocked d the ball rebounded out to McAndrew whose cross to the back post was too long. In the 100th minute of play Bulford received a long ball but the Coleshill defence forced him wide, Bulford not to be outdone put a cross into the back post where Burrell was a hand to head downwards and into the goal to give Dunston the lead. A minute late Bulford advanced on Douglas the Coleshill centre half and shot over the bar. In the second half of extra time Dixon won the ball and laid it off to Bulford who was closed down before he got his shot in. On 115, a Coleshill free kick was met by Lloyd at the back post and his header went just wide. On 119 minutes Douglas was sent off for a foul challenge on McAndrew as he had been set free on the left wing. The game ended with a relieved Dunston side knowing that the Opposition and the conditions had been a real challenge.

Dunston Man of the Match: – Liam Connell, this was a good team performance by Dunston particularly for the central defenders Cattanach and Swailes but when required Liam was their pulling out some brave and challenging saves and literally saving the day for Dunston. Others to be mentioned were McAndrew for his runs at the defence, Burrell and Dixon in midfield and for the relentless forward runs of Wightman and Goddard.
