MIDLAND COMBINATION PREMIER DIVISION
SATURDAY 3rd JANUARY 2004
COLESHILL TOWN 2 v 3 BROCTON
Scorer: Kevin Wagstaff 2.

Coleshill managed to grab defeat from the jaws of victory in this vital six pointer against Brocton. With 88 mins gone the win seemed secure as Town led 2-1 with two Kevin Wagstaff goals, but the visitors never gave up and with the assistance of some generous time keeping, eight added on minutes, Brocton equalised, then stunned not only the home support but the travellers too, by hitting the winner.

With Simon Wzcasek and Gareth Langford away on trial at Shepshed Dynamos, Manager Mick Beadle brought in Ashley Downer for his first start and Danny Nixon was promoted to the starting eleven after five games on the bench.

Coleshill got off to the best possible start when Wagstaff scored in less than a minute. A punt up field was laid into the path of Wagstaff by Pete Hall, and as the left wingbacks shot was partially blocked the ball spun up and over the stranded keeper into the net. Town, cheered by the early strike looked dangerous in attack but Brocton hit back within three minutes firstly forcing a corner, then Richard Inskip volleyed home from the kick to level the scores. It could have been worse as debutant Ashley lost his footing, then handled the ball and saw yellow when it could so easily have been red. But from this point Brocton's challenge started to fade as Coleshill took control. As at Dudley last week, striker James McKenzie had shot after shot blocked saved or scrape the woodwork. Pete Hall saw a looping effort headed off the line and just before the break another McKenzie strike brought a great save from the visitors keeper. In an entertaining game Coleshill were asking all the questions, but Brocton played their part by defending deep, working hard and looking dangerous on the break. Town probed and probed and were finally rewarded on 75 minutes when full back Chris Gee cut inside and fed McKenzie with his back to goal on the edge of the penalty area. The former Cambridge City forward turned and shot in one movement only to see his effort cannon off the foot of the post. Luckily for Coleshill the ball came straight out to Kevin Wagstaff who stroked the ball home. Danny Nixon just failed to meet a Derek Wilkes cross, Chris Davies had a header saved and a McKenzie overhead kick went just wide as Coleshill piled forward in search of more goals. In a rare attack the Brocton full back brought out a fine save from Town keeper Craig Jones and the Staffordshire side sensed all was not lost. The visitors broke away again in the dying minutes to produce a dangerous cross along the six yard line which Coleshill struggled to defend. Brocton maintained the attack but as Coleshill regrouped there seemed to be no room for a shot but somehow Nick Wellecomme squeezed an effort through a forest of legs and just inside the upright. Coleshill couldn't believe it and went in search of the winner their play so richly deserved but on 96 minutes Wellecomme broke free and confidently slotted the ball under the advancing Jones into the net. There was still time for Jones to come up for a Coleshill corner and head the ball onto the bar, then Wagstaff nearly got his hat trick but his shot went just wide as the Referee found time to play on and on.

After the game Manager Mick Beadle, downhearted but not despondent, had invited several new potential signings for talks. The players were keen to sign but were concerned about the manager's caretaker role at the club. It was at this point that the Coleshill board decided to offer Beadle the position on a permanent basis and he willingly accepted.

Team:- Craig Jones, Chris Gee, Steve Lees, Ashley Downer, Derek Wilkes, Carl Smith, Chris Davies, Danny Nixon, James McKenzie, Pete Hall, Kevin Wagstaff. Subs not used Gary Falconbridge, Jamie Cartwright, Tony Gormley.
