Coleshill Town 1 v 5 Rugby Town

SATURDAY 22nd NOVEMBER 2003
MIDLAND COMBINATION PREMIER
COLESHILL TOWN 1 v 5 RUGBY TOWN
Scorer: Craig Davies.

This was only the forth time these two teams have met since Rugby joined Coleshill in the Premier league two seasons ago, and in that time Coleshill haven't took a single point off their Warwickshire counterparts. Manager Mick Beadle was unable to rely on his preferred central midfield partnership of Gareth Langford and Chris Davies, both influential in last weeks win over Castle Vale, as they were both unfit to play. Tony Gormley and Jamie Carraugher took their places, otherwise Coleshill were unchanged.

The first ten minutes saw no sign of the frailties that were to follow as Coleshill had the better of the play. A Derek Wilkes miss hit shot fell to Gary Falconbridge whose snap shot went just wide. Pete Hall should have done better with an attempted lob but with the keeper well off his line, the striker stabbed the ball into the stoppers hands. The same back four who looked unbeatable last week went missing to allow Lee Lavery the first of his three goals on 11mins. The former Coleshill player couldn't belief his luck as he had time and space to pick his spot to give Rugby the lead and settle his side down after an unimpressive start. Within two minutes the visitors were back to increase their lead. A Lavery shot was palmed away at full stretch by Craig Jones but Jamie Mulligan was on hand to tap in the loose ball. Coleshill were in disarray and as tempers increased Gee, Wilkes and Wczasek all saw yellow cards. Coleshill slowly started to rebuild and played some neat football at times. Craig Davies held the ball up with his back to goal then turned sharply and shot just wide of the post. A sustained period of pressure resulted in another Davies shot but for all their possession Coleshill couldn't penetrate a well drilled Rugby rear guard.

Coleshill came out more determined in the second half and were rewarded with Craig Davies 14th goal of the season. Ironically, it also proved to be his last, as the prolific striker signed for league leaders Romulus shortly after the game. Coleshill were on top for the first time and looked the more likely to score the next goal but the best move of the game resulted in Rugby increasing their lead and Coleshill's heads went down. Lavery's shot was heading for the net but in an attempt to clear, Falconbridge helped the ball on its way. And if Lavery was claiming that goal, which would be hard to deny, then he completed his hat trick on the hour mark with a delightful chip over the stranded Jones in the Town goal. Coleshill's only effort of note saw Falconbridge shoot wide as he nipped in to intercept a long ball that the Rugby defence thought was heading for the keeper. It was left to the visitors to increase the misery as Ian McGregor hit the fifth.

Team: - Craig Jones, Chris Gee, Steve Lees (Kevin Wagstaff), Simon Wczasek, Frank Woodburn, Gary Falconbridge (Mitchell Thompson), Tony Gormley (Danny Nixon), Jamie Carraugher, Derek Wilkes, Craig Davies, Pete Hall.
