Stratford Town travelled from Shakespeare’s home city to record a 4-0 win over lacklustre Coleshill Town at Pack Meadow on Tuesday night. Somebody in the home camp must have mentioned Macbeth, as Coleshill were subjected to another heavy defeat which continues their rapid change in fortune over recent weeks.
Two goals in each half reflected the dominance expressed by Stratford, as the Colemen scramble to find reasons for their current poor form. The game also saw both sides finish with ten men, after Matty Robinson saw the red card in the 80th minute for an elbow on Andy Gregory, with Nathan Edgington’s stamp on Neil Kitching in the 90th minute also an offence worthy of a sending off.
The result doesn’t bode well for Coleshill’s league cup ambitions as the teams meet up again on Tuesday, and Stratford had the upper hand from the off, Martin Thompson’s early effort from a Tom James cross excellently saved by Craig Johnson. The scoring should have been opened when Simeon Williams picked up the pieces from Thompson’s second effort of the game, the ball blocked by a defender and falling to Williams who couldn’t manage to keep the ball down with just Johnson to beat.
Minutes later and the visitors had their deserved opener, Rob Thompson-Brown’s cross was diverted goalwards by Liam Reynolds, with a final intricate touch taken by Mykel Beckley to guide the ball inside of the post for the goal. This only served to whet Beckley’s appetite, the scorer almost adding a second goal with a rasping drive, a fine save from Johnson was needed. The young ‘keeper could do nothing to stop Martin Thompson from doubling the advantage before half time, a stupendous 22 yard strike curling into the top corner to cap off an extremely professional first half showing by the away side.
It was more of the same after he restart, and had Thompson-Brown’s 25 yard effort not hit the crossbar it would have been all over after just five minutes of the second period. Just fifteen more minutes had elapsed before it really was an insurmountable deficit, as Thompson doubled his personal tally with a simplistic finish from Beckley’s storming run down the right flank.
This sprung Coleshill into a brief fight back, but Danny Carter’s weak shot was off target, Neil Kitching’s header from a corner seeing the same fate. Stratford ‘keeper Richard Morris didn’t have a notable save to make all game which will worry Coleshill manager Carl Adams, who would have despaired when second half substitute Nathan Edgington finished the scoring with a deflected effort past Craig Johnson as Stratford went home with maximum points, despite the late red cards.
A performance without bite is worrying for Coleshill, who travel to Causeway United next having lost their last three league games.
