ADAMS AIMS FOR SIXTH AS TOWN SCRAPE WIN

A solitary Matty Robinson goal was all that was needed for Coleshill Town to secure all three points against Westfields to consolidate their top eight position. Manager Carl Adams feels that there is reason to continue to look upwards though, claiming that ‘top six is achievable, we can push on and sixth place would cap off a tremendous season.’
There was no reason for optimism in the first fifteen minutes though, as a cagey affair could have been played without goalkeepers in the early stages. A key chance fell to the hosts at the midway stage of the half though, when Recci started off the move with a cross from the right hand side. Robinson cushioned the ball down for Powis to shoot inside the area, but the one on one chance was spurned when ‘keeper Jon Pugh blocked the tame effort.
Robinson had a hand in another attempt on target when his threaded ball found Chris Gumery, who could only shoot comfortably into the gloves of Pugh.
The introduction of Stefano Aronandi and Lewis Moss at half time opened up the game, and the latter created a great chance with a cross from the left channel for Robinson, Pugh once again tipping a decent stabbed effort away from goal. The resulting corner saw Recci and Moss testing Pugh with a couple of headers, neither of which posing much threat.
Coleshill’s much improved second half performance would be rewarded on 55 minutes, substitute Aronandi showing pinpoint accuracy to drop a ball onto Robinson’s head in the centre of the box, the striker directing his effort into the middle of the goal to outfox Pugh and net for the third time this season against Westfields.
The visitors looked lethargic after a long journey to Pack Meadow, but the goal seemed to act as a wake up call, and Sam Harrison almost immediately blazed a half volley over the crossbar. James Filkins missed an even better chance, the front-man skipping through into the box but Craig Johnson excellently closed him down to eliminate the danger.
A second goal looked necessary, and the Colemen were unfortunate not to double their tally with ten minutes remaining. Rob Evans pulled the ball back on the right side of the area for Recci to try his luck, Pugh saving well from the attempt before repeating the feat as he kept out Moss’ shot on the rebound.
It looked as if the three points were staying in Coleshill, but Westfields could and should have taken at least one point back home. A long throw from the visitors caused havoc in the box, and the ball fell to Richard Kear twelve yards out. Somehow the striker managed to blast over the bar when it would have been easier to score. A late headed attempt just wide of the far post from a free kick ensured that the impeccable Craig Johnson would keep another clean sheet as Coleshill set up a positive finish to a magnificent season.

Team: Craig Johnson, Leyiso Recci, Jason Lanns, Luke Edwards, Steve Hakner, Rob Evans, Ben Porter (Chris Charles), Rob Freeman (Steffano Aronandi), Jon Powis, Matty Robinson, Chris Gumery (Lewis Moss).

N.B. Coleshill have now equaled the points total of last season and have two games to improve on it. The abandoned game against Friar Lane is just null and void so that neither team get the points but the game will not be replayed. A strange decision by the FA! Coleshill are at home to Rocester on Thursday before they visit Boldmere on the last day of the season. The Coleman would need nothing less than six points from the two games to have any chance of finishing in sixth place.
