TOWN FAIL TO RAISE BAR

Coleshill crashed to a second defeat in a week at the hands of league leaders Barwell at Pack Meadow in a game in which a few moments of real class helped overcome the spirited hosts.
Barwell are enjoying a hugely successful campaign, having not lost in the league all season, and that run seemed set to be extended after just 16 minutes of the opening whistle, when top scorer Adam Cunnington profited from a communication breakdown in Coleshill’s defensive ranks, picking up a loose ball and looping it over Craig Johnson.
The Colemen pushed on, and were denied a chance to equalise when the referee failed to see Matty Robinson being dragged to the ground inside the 6 yard box in what seemed like a stonewall penalty. The striker was booked for dissent, capping off a poor decision by the official. This failed to disrupt Coleshill’s hunt for a way back into the game, and won a corner at the quarter-hour mark after Robinson’s poked effort was diverted wide. Marvin Johnson swung the set piece into the box, goalkeeper Liam Castle failed to punch the ball away and a deflection sent the ball on its way to the foot of the post. A half clearance was blocked by Chris Gumery, but the resulting effort evaded the goal.
Barwell cruelly doubled their lead on 37 minutes against the run of play, but the goal itself was an impeccable piece of work by Cunnington. The tall front man dispossessed captain Jason Lanns before embarking on a weaving run, skipping into the area past several defenders before tucking the ball into the far corner for his 30th goal in all competitions this season.
Far from letting their heads drop, the more experienced campaigners for Town ensured that the rest of the half was spent trying to bounce back, and Ben Porter almost did just that with a long range effort, the ball soaring the wrong side of the post after Castle had spilled another Marvin Johnson cross.
The hosts would have felt aggrieved to be 2 down at the break having played as well as their opponents, but any hopes of a comeback were shot down on 53 minutes when Jamie Towers netted his tenth league goal of the campaign. A cross from the left wasn’t dealt with by Coleshill’s defence who seemingly left the ball to one another, and Towers was on hand to head into the net at the far post. This third goal finally seemed to have Coleshill on the ropes, as Barwell ruthlessly searched for a fourth. Kevin Charley should have bagged himself a goal, somehow skewing a shot wide from just 6 yards in front of an open net, uncharacteristically so from a player looking for his third goal in as many games.
Chris Gumery was instrumental in the second half attacking play as Town looked for a consolation goal, playing Matty Robinson into the area with a quick free kick enabling the latter to sting the palms of Castle, before Gumery himself tested the visiting ‘keeper after being sent clean through on goal by Johnson’s slick through ball.
The scoring was rounded off by Barwell 2 minutes before the end of regulation time when Nigel Julien penetrated Coleshill’s back line, the midfielder steaming through on goal before sidestepping Craig Johnson to put a helping of gloss onto the final score line. The Colemen will be hoping that this is just a small blip, as the games don’t get any easier, with 3 straight away games against teams from the top five on the horizon.

Team: Craig Johnson, Chris Charles, Luke Edwards, Jason Lanns (Leyiso Recci), Luke Williams, Jon Powis (Rob Freeman), Ryan Scott, Ben Porter (Andy Cameron), Marvin Johnson, Chris Gumery, Matty Robinson.

Booked- Robinson, Cameron, Scott.
