Monday 13th April 2009
Aspire Midland Football Alliance
Coleshill Town 2 v 0 Racing Club Warwick
Scorers: Matty Robinson pen, Scott Wells.

In one Bank Hoiday week end Coleshill saw the best and the worst of the Alliance. Market Drayton Town were excellent! Run away winners of the league with a possibility of record points. Racing Club Warwick are the worst team in the league, not bottom, but definately the worst. Their manager Mark Fenemore is doing a tremendous job under very difficult circumstances but with a turn over of not far short of 100 players getting a settled side is impossible. To be fair to them they never gave up and gave their all even though it was obvious some of them were carrying injuries but apart from a couple of long range efforts, Chris Butler, or the Coleshill back line, were never tested. Coleshill were poor, and were unable to raise their game to see off the oppostition having to wait until the last minute to finally secure the points.

There were two changes to the side well beaten by Drayton, James Dance and Chris Charles both unavailable. Rob Evans and Scott Wells filled those positions and Lee Bloxham, fresh from a three match ban, took a place on the bench.

Matty Robinson should have scored in the opening minutes, the keeper saving his effort with his feet. If that had gone in, and Coleshill settled, it could have been a cricket score but Town let Racing Club off the hook and the visitors grew in confidence and battled for every ball. Scott Wells, Jason Lanns Ben Porter and Tom Starkey all had efforts at goal but the Warwick keeper had little to do with a combination of bad shooting and desperate defending. Daniel Povey tried to reply but his shot was wayward then Ritch Munday headed away a free kick by Chris Ginn. It wasn't pretty to watch but the deadlock was broken on 41 minutes as Tom Starkey went down in the box from a Courtney Shaw corner. Not many appeals but not many protests either when the ref pointed to the spot. Matty Robinson putting away his 25th league goal of the season.

It didn't get any better in the second half. Coleshill huffed and puffed! Warwick worked hard but didn't have a single effort at goal. An end of season game on a bone hard, bouncy pitch, not good fair for the healthy crowd to endue. Lee Hunt headed back toward goal a Shaw corner and Starkey headed over when well placed, then Starkey side footed a Porter cross wide of the post when it looked easier to score. Lanns hit a left foot shot just wide and Simon Volante sent a crisp shot whistling past the post but although the result was never in danger it wasn't until the last minute that Town put the game to bed. Tom Brady sent a long throw to the near post for substitute Steve Palmer. The Racing Club keeper came to claim but got more of Palmer than the ball which left Scott Wells with a tap in to an empty net.

Only three games left, tenth place at the moment and the possibilty of eighth if results go our way. Not bad for a first season in the Alliance but I hope Kitch and Sock can lift the lads for those games and not let the season just peter out.

Team: Chris Butler, Tom Brady, Ritchard Munday, Rob Evans, Lee Hunt, Tom Starkey, Jason Lanns (Simon Volante), Scott Wells, Matty Robinson, Ben Porter (Steve Palmer), Courtney Shaw (Lee Bloxham). Subs not used Neil Kitching, Nick Usher.
