Coleshill Town 2 v 1 Boldmere St Michaels
Scorer: James Dance 2.

SUNDAY MERCURY WROTE
Boldmere St Michaels saw their promotion hopes dented as they slumped to a 2-1 defeat at Coleshill Town, James Dance scoring two goals for the home side.

Coleshill made only one change from the team that beat Highgate on Tuesday as they went in search of a fourth straight win and a fourth clean sheet. Tom Brady was unavailable but Tom Starkey returned after absence due to work commitments. This meant a change in formation as Neil Kitching and Martin Sockett went for a more attacking 3-5-2 line up. This paid dividends as Coleshill swept into a two goal lead within 15 minutes.

The pitch was hard and bobbly as you would expect at this time of year and although Coleshill had a deceptively strong wind at their backs it was the Mikes who settled first and showed why they are currently lying in third place in the league. Town opened up the visitors defence twice before they scored on 9 minutes but the ball ran away from Ben Porter and then James Dance. The lead came from a break away from a Boldmere attack. Chris Butler gathered a cross and quickly fed Courtney Shaw who raced into the opposition half, beat his marker and whipped the ball in. The cross evaded several defenders but landed at the feet of James Dance who hit a swerving shot out of the reach of Jenkins's outstretched hand and into the top corner of the net. Coleshill pushed on again and forced a corner. When the ball was half cleared Jason Lanns bent down to head the ball back into the box and the referee blew for a free kick. Shaw rolled the ball to Dance who found the net through a mass of legs with the help of a deflection. 2-0 14 minutes played. Ricky Baker was causing Coleshill problems as he switched flanks regularly and Kirk Smith started to get to grips with the midfield, pushing his team mates on but Chris Butler was rarely tested in the opening 45 minutes. Jason Lanns headed a Shaw cross wide and Porter toe poked a Robinson lay off just past the post. Boldmere finished the half the stronger as they pinned Town back with a couple of corners, Richard Munday cleared from under the bar a Lee Osborne looping effort and Munday again clearing a Smith free kick.

Chris Butler was a little busier in the second half but the game was scrappy with very few clear cut chances for either side. Butler casually tipped over the bar a Jason Holmes header, Munday cleared for a corner as Osborne shaped to shoot and Anthony Juxon shot wide but Coleshill were coping admirably with Boldmere's threat until a fortunate penalty was awared on 74 minutes. There was little danger as Chris Charles attempted to clear a ball in the box but the ball bounced up arkwardly and hit his hand. There were a few appeals but nothing serious and the linesman with a perfect view never raised his flag but the referee awarded the Mikes a penalty that Lee Osborne dually despatched. 2-1 game on. This was the first goal Coleshill had conceded in 395 minutes. Boldmere went in search for an unlikely equaliser but Coleshill held firm. Holmes headed over, Chris Charles got in front of substitute Simeon Tulloch and prevented the striker from getting a touch from right in front of goal. Coleshill reverted to 4-4-2 for the last 15 minutes as they got pinned further and further back. Butler tipped over a Juxon effort and in time added on a Baker cross was headed onto the bar by Holmes.

Not a vintage performance as Coleshill defended for the whole of the second half but hey! this was third in the league and they had done enough attacking in the first half to secure all three points. Coleshill can now go to league leaders Market Drayton on saturday with their heads held high and nothing to prove and then look forward to the visit of Racing Club Warwick on bank holiday monday.

Team: Chris Butler, Richard Munday, Chris Charles, Lee Hunt, James Dance, Scott Wells (Rob Evans), Tom Starkey (Simon Volante), Jason Lanns, Ben Porter, Matty Robinson, Courtney Shaw. Subs not used Richard Davies, Rob Freeman, Tom Browett.

Match report: Coleshill Town 2 Boldmere St Michaels 1

Boldmere St Michael’s hope of finishing in a strong final position in the Midland Football Alliance table took a dent this afternoon at the `Pack Meadow` ground when they lost to their Warwickshire rivals. The Mikes had created themselves a mountain to climb after they were two goals down early in the game due to sloppy defending. The Mikes have dropped down to 4th in the MFA as Coalville Town climbed above them into 3rd position with a game in hand after their 4-0 win over Biddulph Victoria.

Coleshill showed plenty of attacking intent from the kick off. They did not have to wait too long before making the breakthrough. The aptly names James DANCE waltzed his way onto the scoreboard after only 9 minutes. As players from both sides challenged for the ball he reacted the quickest to hit the back of the net.

It was Coleshill who was asking all the questions of the Boldmere defense and the elusive DANCE was back on his toes to get behind the Boldmere defense only five minutes later to put Coleshill 2-0 up. Already Coleshill looked to be on their way to victory. Boldmere were `rocked and rolled` but manager Rob Mallaband was demanding a positive response from his players.

The game was a contrast of footballing styles between the teams. Boldmere like the passing game especially now that the muddy pitches are beginning to firm up with the better weather while Coleshill have a more direct approach.

The hosts, having established a good lead, settled into a comfortable rhythm retaining possession and made Boldmere chase the game.

The game settled down to a fast free flowing game with plenty of honest endeavor spiced up with some passages of top quality football. Boldmere managed to stop the hemorrhaging of goals for the rest of the game and although they had plenty of possession they were lightweight in attack.

The tempo of the game intensified significantly in the second half especially as Boldmere were looking to get back into the game but lady luck was not on their side. To their credit they kept going and were rewarded with a penalty on 75 minutes. Lee OSBORNE converted it to claim his 16th league goal of the season.

However their desire to score another goal from free play never materialized and they slipped to their 10th loss of the season.

This defeat is not the best preparation for their next game which is the second leg of the League Cup semi final against Highgate United next Tuesday evening. They have a 2-0 lead after the first leg and I am sure they will bounce back- as they usually do- and book a place in the cup final.

Coleshill Town 2-1 Boldmere St. Michaels

The Mikes made the short journey home from near neighbours Coleshill Town with no points, following a poor game that had a distinct end-of-season feel about it.

Rob Mallaband named an unchanged XI following Tuesday's excellent performance against Oadby Town, but that was where the similarity ended. Where the Mikes flew out of the blocks on Tuesday, they found themselves two goals down within the first quarter of an hour.

A cross from the left was not cleared by the Mikes defence. The loose ball fell to James Dance, whose 20-yard volley curled away past the despairing dive of Jenkins into the top corner.

Minutes later the home side increased their lead in controversial circumstances. Jason Lanns dived bravely to head the ball just outside the edge of the Mikes box. Although the ball was no more than waist high, the referee penalised a Mikes defender who tried to hook the ball clear.

The indirect free kick was tapped to Dance and his low drive was deflected past the stranded Jenkins to double the lead.

The scrappy nature of the goal summed up the rest of an uninspiring half. The home side looked most likely of the two sides to threaten, but in truth there was very little in the way of chances.

The visitors came out with more purpose after the break and gradually put more pressure on the home defence. The home side were making little inroads as an attacking force, but the visitors were also short of cutting edge.

As the game entered its final; quarter, the Mikes finally started to threaten. Stevenson had a header tipped over by former Mikes keeper Chris Butler, who was then almost caught out by the strong breeze when dealing with a long cross from McNaught.

The Mikes were well on top in terms of possession now, and for the second successive Saturday the lifeline came from the spot. With regular penalty taker Stuart McNaught substituted, Lee Osborne stepped up to drive emphatically into the bottom corner.

The Mikes sensed what had looked an unlikely point and looked to exert further pressure. Butler produced a smart tip over from Kirk Smith's 20-yard strike.

The Mikes afternoon was summed up in the dying moments. Baker whipped in a great dead ball from the right. Jason Holmes flicked a header towards goal, but with Butler well beaten, the ball bounced off the bar and over.

For the second time in recent weeks, the Mikes left themselves too much to do after conceding early goals. Rob Mallaband urged his troops to focus their minds on the opportunity that presents itself on Tuesday.

The Mikes entertain Highgate United in the second leg of the Moldwell Products League Cup semi-final at the Trover Brown Memorial Ground (7.30pm).

The Mikes hold a 2-0 lead from the first leg as they look to secure a trip to Bescot stadium, but will be in no doubt of the threat the visitors pose, following their Aspire MFA victory on Mikes soil just a few days after the first leg.

League title favourites Market Drayton Town take a 4-0 lead into the away leg of their semi final against Coventry Sphinx.

Boldmere: Adam Jenkins; Adam Swain; Matt Jackson; Adam Wood; Tom Stevenson; Anthony Juxon; Kirk Smith; Stuart McNaught; Jason Holmes; Lee Osborne; Ricky Baker.

Subs: Aaron Hamilton (Wood); Rob Clarke; Simeon Tulloch (Swain); Danny Dubidat (McNaught), Declan Clarke.
