Tuesday 24th March 2009
Midland Football Alliance
Coleshill Town 3 v 0 Biddulph Victoria
Scorers: Matty Robinson 2, Tom Starkey.

What price a goalscorer!!!! Matty Robinson has been missing for three games due to suspension but after he scored with a penalty against Stratford Town on the 28th February, Coleshill have waited over three weeks, and 354 minutes of football to score again. And of course it was Matty that got the goal, but it was a goalscorers claim as he got the finest of touches to a Kitching header before the ball crossed the line.

This still wasn't a convincing performance as Town struggled to overcome a weakened Biddulph team, but it was progress and will have done confidence the world of good. There were several changes to the disappointing defeat at Victoria due to work commitments and of course suspensions. As well as Robinson, Coleshill brought in Rob Evans for his first full start, Neil Kitching his partner in defence and Tom Starkey returned from injury. Keenan Richards has been released after failing to impress in his five games with us.

Coleshill started with a much better tempo but still couldn't find the opening which would bring to an end their goal drought. James Dance was clipped in the box and may have got a penalty if he'd gone down in the first minute, Ben Porter shot powerfully wide, Matty Robinson headed over a Lee Bloxham cross but the best two chances fell to Biddulph with firstly Stephen Bennett left free as the defence opened up but the striker took too long and the chance had gone, and Craig Johnson and the defence had a mix up leaving the ball for Ashley Lawton but his effort just went wide of the post. James Dance ran 60 yards to the bye line and crossed for Robinson at the far post only to see his header cleared off the line. Mathew Swift hit a speculitive shot from distance which had Johnson scrambling along his line as the ball whizzed past the post.

Victoria's Lawton had the first chance of the second half but a great saving tackle by Lee Hunt prevented the visitors from taking the lead. A Dance corner was headed into the ground by Rob Evans, Neil Kitching helped it on and the keeper did well to tip the effort over the bar. But from the second corner on 64 mins Coleshill finally broke their duck. Dance again took the kick, Kitching headed goalward and with touches by Robinson and a defender, the keeper could do nothing to prevent the ball crossing the line. Swift and Lawton did their best to get Biddulph back into the game with efforts across goal but Johnson wasn't put to the test as he was on saturday. Coleshill increased their lead on 79 minutes keeper Philip McGing palming out a Robinson shot but the ball fell nicely for Tom Starkey who had time to pick his spot for his first goal in Coleshill's colours. Two minutes later and it was all over as Lee Bloxham powered his way down the left and crossed for Robinson to get ahead of his man at the near post and head home his 22nd league goal of the season. Swift again went close with a free kick but it was to be Coleshill's night with three very welcome points in the bag.

Coleshill moved up one place in the league to 13th but top ten is still the aim and with Friar Lane at home saturday they should be able to close the gap. After that three very, very hard games are coming up, away to Highgate and Market Drayton with Boldmere at home in between.

Team:- Craig Johnson, Tom Brady, Rob Evans, Neil Kitching, Lee Hunt, Tom Starkey, James Dance, Lee Bloxham, Matty Robinson (Michael Campbell), Ben Porter (Rob Freeman), Courtney Shaw (Stuart Hendrie). Subs not used Simon Volante, Danny Greaves.
