Saturday 1st November 2008
Midland Football Alliance
Coventry Sphinx 3 v 2 Coleshill Town
Scorers:
Colemen: Matty Robinson, Neil Kitching pen.
Sphinx: Tom Thacker, Jerome Murdock, Callum Woodward.

Coleshill now lie 16th in the league but manager Carl Adams insists he should be assessed on how his side does against the teams around him rather than the top six. So playing Sphinx, second, followed by top of the tree, Market Drayton next week, Coleshill weren't expected to pick up many points. The truth is, they definatley didn't deserve to lose this game and if they can show the same comittment next week and then again in the next five games, Oadby, Bridgnorth, Causeway, Oldbury and Studley, then an improvement in their league position would be expected.

Coleshill were without James Dance, suspention, and he was sorely missed. Richard Kavanaugh, Craig Johnson Steve Ruck and Steve Smith had all moved on but Simon Volante returned having served a suspention and on loan Wayne Dyer played his second game.

The wind was very strong making the Sphinx slope worse but Coleshill defended, sometimes bravely, sometimes desperately against the wind and slope and apart from two reaction saves from Chris Butler, weren't in too much trouble. Coleshill looked good when they, on rare occasions, got the ball down and played. Ben Porter, despite bleeding from a cut on his head, had his best game so far for Town and the signs were incouraging as they sides went in for the break scoreless.

With the game increasingly looking like 0-0 a long, wind assisted clearance on 67 mins caught out Sphinx captain Terry Ward, leaving Matty Robinson to shrug off the challenge of Liam Kay and lob the home keeper for the lead. Coleshill's downfall this season is that they are not clever enough to keep the ball when the going gets tough. Sphinx upped the pressure and within seven minutes not only equalised but took the lead. Jerome Murdock, easily Sphinx's best player, went to ground when challenged by Josh McPherson in the box and the assistant ref flagged for a pen. Tom Thacker, who always seems to score against Coleshill no matter who he plays for, put the spot kick away. Murdock was the tormentor again as he got his shot off quickly when in the box again but Butler would be disappointed that he was beaten at his near post despite getting a hand to the effort. On 85 mins an incident happened that the referee had to explain the circumstances in the bar afterwards. Sphinx captain Terry Ward went down in his own box with the ball miles away and the referee looking in the other direction. Michael Campbell was checking for blood on his lip and the assistant was furiously flagging. The up shot was a red card for Campbell, a penalty for Coleshill and not even a yellow card for Ward that would have added to his earlier one. Ah well! He was obviously the innocent party! Not! Neil Kitching duly put away the penalty all be it at the second attempt, the overly fussy referee making him take it again despite finding the net the first time. With now less than 5 mins remaining Coleshill looked well worthy of a point but deep into injury time left full back Callum Woodward tried his luck with his right foot and crashed the ball into the net via the underside of the bar.

In winning the Com last year Coleshill gained many late points by a bit of luck and the sheer will to win but this season the points are harder to come by and that bit of luck had deserted them when they really need it.

Team:- Chris Butler, Josh McPherson, Lee Hunt, Neil Kitching, Andy Sutherland, Stuart Hendrie (Michael Campbell), Wayne Dyer, Lee Bloxham, Matty Robinson, Ben Porter, Nathan Pulciano (Simon Volante). Subs not used Stuart Adamson, Carl Adams.

Non-League Paper Wrote
Coleshill Town's Michael Campbell saw red as his side suffered a 3-2 defeat at Coventry Sphinx. The ten-man visitors looked to be sharing the points until Callum Woodward struck an injury time winner for second placed Sphinx.

Coleshill Gazette Wrote
Sphinx lie second in the league, so this was going to be tough but Coleshill defended well and took a shock lead through Matty Robinson with only twenty minutes left to play. Unfortunately this opened the flood gates and more goals followed. Sphinx equalised with a generous penalty and then took the lead. Coleshill levelled with five to go when they got their own penalty but had Michael Campbell sent off at the same time for retaliation. Neil Kitching scored from the spot. Coleshill's hard work counted for nothing as Sphinx hit the winner deep into injury time.

COLESHILL HERALD WROTE
Late Woes For Coleshill Town
Coleshill slumped to an undeserved defeat at the hands of Coventry Sphinx on saturday. The men from Packington Lane went into the match without James Dance through suspension and he was sorely missed. The wind was very strong making the Sphinx slpoe worse but Coleshill defended, sometimes bravely, sometimes desperately, against the weather and slpoe in the first half. Apart from two reaction saves from Chris Butler, they weren't in too much trouble. It wasn't until the 67th minute that the goals started to come as Matty Robinson shrugged off the challenge of Liam Kay and lobbed the home keeper to give Coleshill the lead. Sphinx upped the pressure and within seven minutes not only equalised but took the lead. Jerome Murdock, easily Sphinx's best player, went to ground when challenged by Josh McPherson in the box and the assistant referee flagged for a penalty. Tom Thacker, who regularly scores against Coleshill, put the spot kick away. Sphinx then took the lead as Murdock beat Butler to make it 2-1 before Neil Kitching converted a penalty to level things up for the visitors. Coleshill looked well worth a point but deep into injury time, Sphinx left back Callum Woodward tried his luck with his right foot and crashed the ball into the net via the underside of the bar.
