COLESHILL CHRONICLE WROTE
The “Dark Clouds” Of Defeat Are Moving
The dark clouds of defeat that have lingered over Coleshill Town for so much of the season seem to be blowing away. After their victory over Lincoln a fortnight ago they seem to be a new team. On Saturday they collected two very welcome points when they beat Hillbrook United by five goals to one. The wind played havoc with the first 15 minutes and both teams found that ball control was extremely difficult. The Town’s goal came under fire when a hard “wind-assisted” shot from Hillbrook centre forward Payne beat Cooper but luckily for Coleshill right back John Dore was on hand to kick the ball of the line. Coleshill’s first success came after 17 minutes when centre forward Paddy Murray shrugged off three defenders to shoot past Myring into the net. Hillbrook tried hard to use the gale force wind to their advantage but the Coleshill defence gave them no chance. The Town increased their lead after 28 minutes after they had been given a penalty for hands. Roy Middleton saw Myring push out his first attempt but gave him no chance with his second. Five minutes from half time Hillbrook were given a gift goal when left back Alan Wesley put the ball in his own net after mis-timing a clearance. In the second half Coleshill had the wind behind them and it took them only two minutes to use this advantage. Ian Ewan found Murray unmarked with a pin-point pass and the centre forward gratefully put the ball into the net. The Town continued to call the tune and further goals from Ewan and Middleton gave them two golden points in their struggle to move clear of the “danger-zone”.

At some point after this he returned to Birmingham and enlisted in the Army, and served abroad with the 1st Battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment (service number 9259). Private Fitzgerald was awarded the Indian General Service Medal 1908 with two bars. In 1911 he was serving in Ceylon & India. At the outbreak of WW1 the 1st Royal Warwickshire Regiment were at Shorncliffe, Kent, forming part of the 10th Brigade, 4th Division. They were quickly mobilised and landed in France on 22nd August 1914, after initially being held back to defend England against a possible German invasion. The Battalion provided reinforcements at the Battle of Le Cateau and saw action at the Battle of the Marne, the Battle of the Aisne and the Battle of Messines. They also took part in the Christmas Truce of 1914. At the beginning of February 1915 the 1st Battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment were away from the frontline trenches for a few days, and billeted near Steenwerk in northern France, close to the border with Belgium. On the 8th February a group of men left their billets to have a look around and buy some food locally. They were returning to their billets along the railway in the evening when a light engine came and accidentally killed two of the men: Private Allen Yapp and Private Joseph Fitzgerald. Both men were buried the next day in La Creche Communal Cemetery. Private Fitzgerald was posthumously awarded the 1914 Star, British War and Allied Victory medals. He is also remembered on the War Memorial in St Teresa and the Sacred Heart, Coleshill.
