SUNDAY MERCURY WROTE
Stratford maintained their unbeaten home league record when striker Gary Wareing scored the vital match winning goal in the first half to register his fifth goal in eight days. Stratford almost went in front in the 21st minute when John Mitchell was played clear by Richard Holt but having rounded the keeper the Stratford forward shot into the side netting from an acute angle. Stratford too a deserved lead in the 37th minute when Wareing took advantage of a Mitchell cross to head home from close range. Stratford dominated for long periods of the second half and they almost increased their advantage midway through the half when a John O'Brien through ball put Mitchell in the clear but Houghton advanced from goal to clear his line.
