Tuesday 1st January 2008
Midland Combination Premier Division
Coleshill Town 1 v 1 Nuneaton Griff
Scorer: Richard Kavanaugh.

Most teams have a bogey side! A team they can't beat for love nor money! A team that no matter how well or badly you play, you know your not going to win! A side that you have lots of luck against but all bad! Well, for Coleshill, it's Nuneaton Griff! Town haven't took a single point off Griff for four seasons. Throw in a cup game (lost) and that's eight consequetive defeats! So when Chris Millard scored on 71 mins after a very even, well contested and competitive game, it didn't come as any great shock. What was unusual however, was the fact that Coleshill equalised with a hopefull Richard Kavanaugh free kick which the visitors keeper completely lost the flight of, and the ball sailed into the top corner of the net. It was a fitting end to a game that neither side deserved to lose but might just prove to be a pivitol moment in Coleshill's season and finally lay the long running jinx to rest!

Coleshill were about to announce an unchanged team, a rare event in it's self, but Kristian Kelsall failed a late fitness test and Josh McPherson took his place. Griff were on the back of only one defeat in their last seven games and were full of confidence, well organised, hard working and had a couple of players with a bit of class about them. Had the season just started I'm sure they would be amongst the front runners but they may still have a hand in the championship as they still have to play Coleshill again as well as Southam at home.

The game was contested mainly in midfield with chances at a premium Michael Campbell and Matty Robinson for Town and James Fox and James Harri for Griff having efforts without seriously testing the keepers. The sides took turns at having periods of supremacy, Campbell having a shot well saved when Town were on top but the visitors took advantage to take the lead from their best spell. Fox had just sent an effort wide when standing right in front of goal before Millard finished off a sustained attack which Coleshill struggled to clear. Town came back at Griff and Johnson had to be sharp to save at Robinson's feet and James Dance's direct running earned him the free kick that led to Kavanaugh's equaliser on 79 mins. Both sides went in search of a winner in the last ten minutes but a series of Griff corners was the closest either side got.
