Saturday 22nd December 2007
FA Vase 3rd Round
Coleshill Town 1 v 2 Blackstones
Scorer: Josh McPherson.

Coleshill bowed out of the FA Vase but it took a 90th minute disputed penalty to finally book Blackstones passage into the fourth round. A dogged rather than spectacular performance by Town saw them match their Level 5 opponents, save by save, tackle by tackle and chance by chance.

Richard Kavanagh returned from a six week injury lay off at the expense of cup tied Lee Hunt and also long term injury victim Simon Volante made the bench.

Blackstones started the better of the two teams with Coleshill showing them too much respect. Man of the Match Phil Stebbing was a constant threat with his jincking runs at the heart of the defence. It was Stebbing that had the first real chance but after skipping a challenge and reaching the bye line he shot into the side netting. Stebbing was back however on 16 mins to gain his side a penalty after another mazy run into the box was ended with a crunching but miss-timed tackle. Dan Cotton stepped up and calmly slotted home the spot kick. Only a minute later Ross Watson was denied a second for the visitors by a tremendous saving tackle from Andy Sutherland then Chris Butler made a great save from a Stebbing effort. Coleshill were only just holding on at this point but they slowly started to believe and came more into the game. Brian Gray headed into Matty Robinson's path, his shot bringing the first save for the Stones keeper. Robinson gained a free kick and Richard Kavanagh's effort from 22 yards went just over. Robinson had a shout for a penalty but the ball broke for James Dance who shot just wide. Luke Kennedy had an effort saved by Butler and then Neil Kitching's near post effort was well saved by Blackstones keeper Ian Flavell as the game opened up. Coleshill levelled the scores just a minute from the break. Kitching flicked onto Gray who laid the ball back into the path of captain Josh McPherson who shot powerfully home from 20 yards out. Watson almost immediately regained the lead but his shot went wide when well placed.

Coleshill now had the bit between their teeth and almost took the lead on the re-start, Dance shooting wide from a Robinson back heel. Kevin Ainslie sent a powerfull 25 yard free kick just over the bar. Dance and Robinson combined to force a corner which Blackstones struggled to clear before McPherson shot wide. Blackstones substitute Andrew Boome brought out a fine save from Butler but chances were at a premium as the action was confined to the midfield. On 77 minutes 18 year old Ryan Scott re-acted to a challenge, pushing his opponent in the chest and was given his marching orders by the Ref. Coleshill continued pushing forward and Dance cut inside from the left, shot for the far corner, but the effort was palmed away by the impressive Flavell. The game looked to be heading for extra time and with a stalemate between the sides a replay was the most likely outcome but on the 90 min mark Stebbing again jincked into the box and when he went to ground under the challenge of both Kitching and Kavanagh, the Ref again pointed to the spot. Not as clear cut a decision as the first spot kick, and harsh on a Coleshill side that had worked it's socks off, but a chance to finish the game and Cotton remained calm to send Butler the wrong way. In time added on Kristian Kelsall took a free kick from an acute angle and his effort was going in until Flavell dove full length to palm away Coleshill's last chance.
