Postby Alan Beckett » Sun Dec 02, 2007 4:54 pm

Saturday 1st December 2007
Midland Combination Challenge Cup Round 3
Coleshill Town 0 v 2 Highgate United

Injuries are slowly starting to clear up with Andrew Sutherland and Brian Gray returning to the side and Danny Carter made the bench. Neil Kitching also returned after a short period with Shifnal but to an unfamiliar role of centre back. Richard Kavanagh, Ryan Scott and Simon Volante were all still missing but are close to a return.

The Mid Com Prem's top two have their priorities elsewhere but a win today was a passage to the quarter finals. Meanwhile Southam took over top spot in the league as they won at Bolehall Swifts.

There was nothing to report in the first half as both sides cancelled each other out. Neither keeper had a worthwhile save to make as the play was mainly confined to midfield. Coleshill probably just edged it with Michael Campbell, James Dance and Matty Robinson having efforts blocked. Highgate had a shout for a penalty when Houston went down but the excitement was limited until on 37 mins the Ass Ref decided to liven things up. Chris Butler kicked from his hands but the official flagged for hand ball!!!!!!! Butler lined up his wall but left a big gap that Tom Thacker took advantage of, shooting home the free kick. Coleshill finished the half with some sustained pressure but the final ball was poor and clear cut chances non existant.

Highgate stepped up a gear in the second half and won every second ball and 50-50 as Coleshill looked as though they didn't believe they could beat Gate. Thacker, a constant threat, hit the side netting and cut inside but had his shot blocked before being put through by Houston to slot under Butler for his and United's second. Coleshill changed things round with Kitching going up top and Danny Carter coming on but again a breakthrough just wouldn't come. Gummery had a chance to increase the lead but shot well wide and the game just petered out with Highgate deserving to progress.

Not too much harm done with both Pershore and Castle Vale going down but Carl Adams needs to quickly pick his troops up for the trip to Heather on Tuesday night.

Team: Chris Butler, Andy Sutherland, Neil Kitching, Lee Hunt, James Dance (Sam Chatwin), Kristian Kelsall, Josh McPherson, Stuart Adamson (Danny Carter), Brian Gray, Michael Campbell (Ben Usher), Matty Robinson. Sub not used Shay Morgan.

Highgate United: Pery Cox, Chris Charles, Lee Brosnan, Robert Higgs, Jimmy Conway, Luke Edwards, Kieran Rowbotham, Chris Hayden, Tom Thacker, Chris Gummery, Duane Houston.
