WEDNESDAY 12th SEPTEMBER 2007
MIDLAND COMBINATION PREMIER DIVISION
BARNT GREEN SPARTAK 0 V 5 COLESHILL TOWN
Scorers: David Brush, Michael Campbell 2, Danny Carter 2.

From reading Spartak’s programme and some club web sites, Coleshill have a massive budget and are favourites to win the league. Fifth in the table, only one defeat and a game in hand on the leaders would seem to suggest we are in the championship race but realistically Town haven’t been that convincing, until now! Whether it was down to the new manager or players lifting their game for the new manager, who knows but Coleshill matched a physical, pacy, and aggresive home side and then had that little bit more class in vital area’s, especially the two forwards, Campbell and Carter, who are currently on fire. Colin Strong picked the team, Rob Hipkiss replacing the injured Scandrett, Simon Volante in for Richards and Jake Sammons made his first start at the expense of Greaves, but Carl Adams took charge from then on in.

Michael Campbell should have scored in the 1st minute but former Town centre half Sean Burrell made a great tackle just as Campbell shot. Coleshill were up for it and closed down at every opportunity and the pressure paid off as early as the third minute when a clearance was blocked, the ball fell kindly to Campbell who crossed for his strike partner Danny Carter to tap home. With a lead the manager was calling for the play to be slowed down but Coleshill allowed the game to continue at a frantic pace which suited the home side and made for an entertaining, end to end game. Chris Butler came for a cross but a forward got his head to the ball first and Rob Hipkiss needed to be on hand to clear. David Brush had an overhead kick blocked before Martell Beckford had a shot well saved by Butler and Django Farrell shot wide. Then with Barnt Green in the ascendancy Jake Sammons got back to help an overworked defence only to see his clearance header come back into play off his own post. Brush released Campbell and again Burrell tackled just in the nick of time. Farrell had an overhead kick saved and then the ball bounced over Hipkiss leaving Farrell free on goal but his shot was weak and easily saved. Carter nearly got the gift of the season when the home keeper kicked the ball straight at him but it bounced off his shin and back into the keeper’s arms. Coleshill weathered the storm and hit back as the first half came to a close. A Brush free kick was headed over by Josh McPherson then Brush released Carter down the left channel. The striker took on the keeper and got to the bye line before crossing for Campbell who seemed to take an age but turned and shot home to double the lead. Spartak tried immediately to get something before the break and Chris Butler did well to tip onto the bar a goal bound header, Farrell missed a great opportunity but headed wide and Butler saved again before the ref finally blew the whistle.

Farrell had another great chance early in the second half but Butler made a fine stop to turn the ball round the post. On 48mins a Dance through ball found Campbell who played a couple of quick 1-2’s with Carter who then jincked past the final defender and shot home, 3-0. Carter was causing real problems for the home defence and nearly completed his hat trick but shot just wide then a minute later pulled the ball back for Simon Volante but a defender, trying to clear, gave the ball straight to Campbell who was clear on goal and easily shot past the keeper for No4. Barnt Green tried to get back into the game mainly through the efforts of substitute Delroy Brown but Coleshill were in no mood to give away a clean sheet and defended stoutly. On 67 mins Campbell’s pressure resulted in the ball falling to Carter and his vicious shot was parried out to Brush who had little time but his weak shot trickled into the corner of the net for five. The scoring stopped there but it could have been worse for the home team. Twice Carter was denied his third, McPherson shot over, Neil Kitching had a goal bound effort well saved and substitute Kristian Kelsall had the ball in the net with his first touch but was adjudged off side, as well as another shot blocked on the line.

Job well done! Great start for Adams. Up to second in the league a point behind leaders Pershore, Feckenham on Saturday and a trip to Pershore coming up at the end of the month.
