SATURDAY 26th DECEMBER 2006
MIDLAND COMBINATION PREMIER DIVISION
COLESHILL TOWN 1 v 2 BOLEHALL SWIFTS
Scorer: Shay Morgan.

Coleshill's record against Bolehall Swifts is not good but when we beat them at Rene Road back in August it looked as though the "Curse of the Swifts" was broken but the curse came back with a vengeance as Coleshill's five week reign at the top of the league came to an end in disappointing manner. Yes, Swifts were well up for the game and they could have been 3-0 up as they made the most of the chances that came their way but Town had good opportunities too but the luck was against them in an even first half and then they spent the entire second half camped in the visitors half without really testing the keeper.

Influential midfielder Josh McPherson was missing, in came Reserve team captain Scott Wilson and Simon Volante took over from the injured Paul Burns.

Swifts lost their first game of the festive campaign 4-1 to Castle Vale but they were in no mood to repeat that result as they raised their game against the league leaders. Coleshill started confidently but fell behind with only eight minutes on the clock. Steve Smith, who caused Coleshill's defence all sorts of problems all afternoon, crossed to the far post where midfield runner John Rhodes headed back across Chris Butler and into the far corner of the net. A David Brush free kick was headed on by Ryan Gardiner and Scott Wilson only just failed to get a touch with a diving header. The best move of the match so far involved a Carlos McIntosh flick on to Michael Campbell and back before feeding James Dance whose shot was goal bound but Barnes in the visitors goal made a miraculous save, palming out for a corner. Brush's corner was headed onto the bar by Wilson as Swifts enjoyed a charmed life and Coleshill were soon back with another corner that was cleared from beneath the bar. In a repeat of a goal conceded against Massey Ferguson, Coleshill looked for an offside but it was the player not involved in play that was in an off side position and Steve Smith was allowed to go on and stroke the ball past Butler for 2-0 on 28mins. Rob Ellis stung the hands of the keeper and once again the corner was hoofed away off the goal line. If Coleshill thought things weren't going their way they had a massive let off as a Bolehall header hit the bar, came down hitting Butler on the way but was hacked clear without crossing the line. Coleshill finished the half the stronger as a Campbell shot from inside the six yard box was blocked by a defender throwing himself at the ball. Town went into the break 2-0 down but it could so easily been 3-3.

Coleshill took some time to get going in the second half as Ward made a great saving tackle, Butler did well to clear a difficult ball on the edge of his area and Swifts Ian Purvey had a goal bound effort blocked but Town started to turn up the heat. Campbell had a run and shot go wide and then the same player had a shot blocked inside the six yard box with another last ditch block. Coleshill pushed the visitors further and further back but they were dangerous on the break and a shot over the bar and a Ward tackle saved the embarrassment of going further behind. With 70mins gone Manager Mick Beadle through on Oluwaseyi Morgan in a last effort to get into the game. Ward lobbed the ball forward to Campbell, he bullied his way into the box and crossed for Morgan to score with his first touch, game on! Shay Morgan nearly scored again with his second touch from a Volante pass but his effort was blocked. Smith dragged an effort wide that would have made the game safe for Swifts, but Coleshill threw everything at the visitors goal. Campbell, Morgan and McIntosh all had efforts to try and get the equaliser but Swifts held on for a result that knocks Coleshill off the top of the table with both Coventry Sphinx and Highgate leaping above them.

Team:- Chris Butler, Mark Ward, Josh Gunter (Matt Tomlinson), Ryan Gardiner, Rob Ellis (Shay Morgan), Simon Volante, David Brush, Scott Wilson (Des Wilkes), Michael Campbell, Carlos McIntosh, James Dance. Subs not used Carl Smith.
