Postby Alan Beckett » Sun Nov 19, 2006 4:28 pm

SATURDAY 18th NOVEMBER 2006
MIDLAND COMBINATION CHALLENGE CUP
COVENTRY COPSEWOOD 4 v 3 COLESHILL TOWN A.E.T.
Scorers: Michael Campbell 2, Rob Ellis.

The record breaking run finally came to an end when Coventry Copsewood scored in the 27th minute but the impressive 802 minutes that have passed since Coleshill last picked the ball out of the net will go down in the history books and will take some beating. The nine game winning sequence in all competitions also came to an end but it was a close run thing as the home side needed extra time to finally claim a spot in the next round against Massey Ferguson. The records don't stop there though as Town have won their last nine league games and have gone 595 minutes since conceding a league goal and with current leaders Walsall Wood coming to Pack Meadow on Tuesday night, three points will take them to the top of the table for the first time since the 1983/84 season.
Coleshill's record breaking run has been built with a solid back three (four including the keeper) and it was the disruption to this unit that was Town's undoing. Manager Mick Beadle was already without the services of Rob Hipkiss and then Mark Ward had to be withdrawn with only 12mins on the clock both due to injury. Add to that the injury to keeper Greg Allen who was replaced by stand in keeper Des Wilkes, and the understanding was thrown all at sea.
This is a game that Coleshill should have won but the home side were desperate for an upset and battled for every ball. The match itself never got going with the stop and start suiting Copsewood better. Both sides had chances to open the scoring but on 27 minutes the deadlock was broken with a fine individual goal. Chris Heal let the ball run across his body and his first touch sent him clear on goal. Greg Allen was routed to the spot as Heal took his shot early and found the far corner of the net. Coleshill started to play some good football and when they scored on 37 minutes they looked well capable of going on to win. The goal was a contender for goal of the season as Raddi Richards, Michael Campbell and Danny Carter exchanged passes to slice open the home defence then Richards slipped the ball inside to Rob Ellis who tapped home from 2 yards. Carter and Simon Volante had chances to put Town in front before the break as the visitors started to look like title contenders and they started the second half in the same manner but the game changed on 55 mins. A ball over the top caught Coleshill flat footed and Greg Allen raced off his line but as he and the forward collided Allen went down in a heap and needed lengthy treatment. Ten minutes later the same ball over the top had Allen struggling and Stuart Fraser took advantage to lob the keeper and retake the lead. Allen had to be replaced by Des Wilkes resulting in another defensive reshuffle. On 73 minutes Coleshill dug deep to force another equaliser as Michael Campbell headed in a Volante corner. With ten minutes remaining Town were pushing for the winner but Copsewood broke quickly from the edge of their own box and Steve Padmore struck a sweet shot from 25 yards that flew past Wilkes for 3-2. The injury to Greg Allen had taken six or seven minutes and Coleshill needed every second of that time added on as Campbell equalised deep into injury time with an individual goal.
In Extra time Coleshill were much more up beat than their opponents but it was the home team that found the only goal to settle the tie. Town found themselves outnumbered in defence and Paul O'Dyer took advantage to shoot the winner past Wilkes on 100 minutes.
