Tuesday 11th October 2005
Midland Combination Premier Division
Alveston 3 v 4 Coleshill Town
Scorers: Kevin Wagstaff, David Brush, James Dance, Donavan Rowe.

Alveston must have found some players from somewhere as after struggling all last season they are flying this term with only one defeat. They had a very good win on Saturday against Cadbury, despite being without on loan striker Martin Thompson. The Leamington player had been recalled by last years champions and was to miss this game as well. Mick Beadle was almost able to field an unchanged team to the one that took Coventry Copsewood apart last Saturday but Jamie Shipway was unavailable, David Brush returned from injury to take his place.

Alveston started the game confidently as you would expect from a top of the league side but although they worked hard and counter attacked with speed and in numbers, they failed to trouble Millington-Day in the Coleshill goal. Town started to play some good football and take the game to the home team but were stunned by a route one goal as the half hour approached. From a Coleshill move involving several players resulting in a Wagstaff shot, the Home Guard keeper launched a long ball which was flicked on by the giant centre forward and No 10 wasted no time getting his shot off which squeezed past Day and into the net. Coleshill only took a few minutes to get back into their stride with an acrobatic shot from Wagstaff and a Campbell effort saved by the keeper. Alveston could have increased their lead before the break when their captain broke free with a run from deep but Millington-Day did well to save at his feet.

Coleshill started the second half as they had finished the first, on top, but again they were stunned as Alveston increased their lead with a header from a corner which the linesman indicated had crossed the line. Coleshill needed a break and it duly came in the form of a free kick following a foul on Michael Campbell on 55 mins. David Brush took the kick and with the aid of a slight deflection found the net from 20yds out. Coleshill had the ball in the net again within a minute but the referee gave a foul against the keeper but Coleshill were not to be denied as Des Wilkes lofted the ball forward for Campbell to flick into the path of James Dance who held off two defenders before shooting past the keeper. Coleshill were now on the rampage with the home team unable to stem the tide of attacks. Wagstaff had a goalbound shot desperately blocked at the last second but the midfieder was soon back as his free kick following a foul on Rob Ellis, sqeezed past the wall and into the corner of the net. From a short corner Sam Chatwin sent in an inch perfect cross which Brush got to first but send his effort over the bar. Campbell brushed off the attention of a defender before passing inside to the running Dance who shot powerfully. The keeper parried the effort into the path of Donavan Rowe who hit a shot with such power that the keeper only saw it when it came back from hitting the back of the net. Alveston had lost their shape and composure and were lucky to get away cardless following a self induced brawl which non of the officials saw clearly. With the game in the dying minutes and the points safe, Coleshill stood and watched as the substitute headed in a cross to make the scoreline much closer than it should have been.

This is without a doubt the best squad of players I have seen at my time at Pack Meadow and they are starting to produce the performances to match their talent.

Team, Miles Millington-Day, Alan Wright, Simon Bradbury, Des Wilkes, Sam Chatwin, Dan Greaves (Donavan Rowe), Kevin Wagstaff, Rob Ellis, David Brush (Linsell Taylor), Micheal Campbell (Myrone Levy), James Dance. Sub not used Chris Gee.
