MATCH REPORT
Colemen Left Frustrated Despite Dominant Display Against Sutton
By Ian Pugh
Coleshill Town were left to rue missed opportunities on Monday night as two costly errors handed Sutton Coldfield Town a 2-0 victory at Pack Meadow, despite a performance that deserved far more from the hosts.
The evening got off to the worst possible start for the Colemen. After just nine minutes, a routine pass back took a wicked bobble immediately before reaching Cam, causing a mistimed clearance. Sutton striker Reece Craig-Gibson reacted quickest, guiding the ball into the net and handed the visitors an early lead.
The setback could easily have knocked Coleshill out of their stride, but instead the home side responded impressively. From that point onwards, Harry Harris' men took control of the contest, dominating possession and limiting Sutton to only occasional opportunities on the break.
Coleshill repeatedly threatened from set pieces, with corners causing chaos inside the visitors' penalty area. Time and again the ball pinballed around dangerously, but the Colemen simply could not find the decisive touch needed to force an equaliser.
As the first half progressed, the hosts continued to dictate the play and looked the more likely side to score, only for Sutton's defence to hold firm and preserve their slender advantage going into the break.
The second half followed a similar pattern. Coleshill remained on the front foot, pressing high, winning possession in advanced areas and probing for an opening. Their energy and intensity never dropped, but the elusive goal continued to evade them.
With the clock ticking down and the Colemen throwing everything forward in search of a leveller, lightning struck for a second time. In the 79th minute, another mistake was ruthlessly punished by Sutton. Aaron Francis Duncan Cameron seized upon the opportunity and calmly slotted home to double the visitors' lead and leave Coleshill with a mountain to climb.
Despite the two-goal deficit, the Colemen continued to battle until the final whistle, but it was not to be their night.
There were positives for Harry Harris to take from the performance. His side controlled large periods of the game, created pressure throughout and once again showed they are capable of competing with anyone in the division. However, the manager acknowledged that football can be a cruel game, and failing to convert dominant spells into goals leaves teams vulnerable to being punished at the other end.
The challenge now is to turn encouraging performances into results. If Coleshill can maintain the same intensity, commitment and attacking intent while becoming more clinical in front of goal, there is every reason to believe the rewards will follow.
