Town’s First Point

Shout it loud! Coleshill picked up their first Midland Combination point of the season at Malvern. Coleshill played the first half with a strong wind behind them and they enjoyed the better of the exchanges. Bobby Whillock threatened the Malvern goal twice in the first 10 minutes and the home side were forced to back pedal in the face of some lively attacks. It was the former West Ham forward Dudley Tyler who looked the most dangerous in Malvern’s spasmodic raids, but Coleshill’s Colvin gave him little room to operate effectively. A speculative cross from 45 yards by Page created a panic situation in the Malvern goalmouth. With the keeper off his line the ball floated tantalisingly towards the net, but luckily for Malvern it curled wide of the post. Steve Whipps maintained Coleshill’s offensive with excellent crosses from the right wing and from one such sortie Whillock saw keeper Hingley tip a smart header over the cross-bar. Coleshill’s keeper Sammons did well to save a pile-driver from Jenkins and near the interval Sammons was again called into action, producing another two fine saves. Pressure mounted on Coleshill at the start of the second half as Tyler and Stallard both shot inches wide, but Whipps replied with two forceful runs and Whillock almost gave Coleshill the lead. Malvern lost a lot of composure due to the tight marking of Coleshill’s midfield and defence. Whipps was again to the fore, forcing Hingley to save after running on to a cross from Page. Play swung from end to end in the closing stages, but neither side could apply the finishing touch. Manager Mervyn Parsons, obviously delighted that Coleshill had broken their duck and at last got a point said: “Our defence and midfield played with great determination and did a most efficient job. I’m sure the team will continue to pick up points if all members of the side continue to show this sort of pride in their performance.” This Saturday Coleshill visit Cinderford Town in another Midland Combination First Division game.
