Fight Back By Coleshill To No Avail
After their previous week’s cup success against Alcester, manager Mervyn Parsons was hoping that Coleshill would “break their duck” in the Midland Combination and secure their first point of the season, but despite a late rally the Pack Meadow squad tumbled to their 11th successive league defeat. Title chasing Blakenall rushed into a three goal lead, but Coleshill scared the visitors with a spirited fight back, that deservedly brought them two goals. In a hectic start the game swung from end to end and Ellgood shot narrowly over, following good work by Whillock. In a hectic start the game swung from end to end and Ellgood shot narrowly over, following good work by Whillock. Hevingham intervened quickly to prevent Blakenall’s striker France from getting into a scoring position, but in the 10th minute poor defensive work allowed the visitors Lester to open the scoring Before Coleshill could recover Smith banged in goal number two. Coleshill replied with Griffin heading just wide after running on to a near post cross from Whipps. Sarson then overlapped well to set up another Coleshill attack, which ended with Whillock forcing a save from keeper Whitehead. Blakenall again showed the way to goal in the 33rd minute, with Whitehouse scoring and Blakenall’s finishing had certainly been decisive. In contrast Coleshill missed another scoring chance near half time when Page sent Whillock away with a fine through ball and from the latter’s crosss, Whipps headed off target. A determined onslaught by Coleshill sparked off the second half and Steve Whipps reduced the deficit with a great individual goal in the 60th minute. At this stage Moseley replaced the injured Hevingham, but Coleshill continued to press forward and it was against the run of play when Blakenall counter attacked to net their fourth goal through Lester. Page hit back for the homesters with a stinging drive that Whitehead did well to save from Ellgood and Whipps. In the 88th minute Ellgood was upended and from the penalty spot Allen saw his shot blocked by Whitehead. From the rebound Allen had another chance, but again his shot was parried out and in the ensuing melee Blakenall’s Taylor put the ball in his own net. Into injury time and Coleshill severly tested Blakenall’s rearguard, Whillock headed wide following an Allen free kick, Colvin volleyed past the post and Whillock brought yet another save from Whitehead. This grand-stand finish by Coleshill could so easily have brought them a point, but as it is they have to continue their uphill struggle to get off the bottom rung with a visit to Malvern Town this Saturday.
