Coleshill's Mixed Fortunes

With their away match at Oldbury snowed-off on New Years Day, Coleshill had to contend themselves with just two points from their two Christmas games against Racing Club Warwick.
A goal from Malcolm Phelps in the 36th minute gave Coleshill victory at Warwick on Boxing Day and the match was highlighted by the encouraging performance of 15 year-old Gary Shaw in midfield. Goalkeeper King also had another superb game for Coleshill, while Newey, Roy Phelps and Eddie Hanlon all defended well. Racing attacked strongly in the opening stages and King had to deal with three corners before saving brilliantly a shot from Sealey and then blocking an effort from Rainbow with his legs. In the 20th minute, Taylor beat three Coleshill players on the bye-line to tee the ball up for Sealey, but the Racing striker shot over from only four yards out. Montgomery then saw a shot hit the post, but Coleshill rode their luck and from a free-kick taken by Holder the home defence was caught flat-footed as Malcolm Phelps controlled the ball expertly, to turn and slam in a great goal, his fourth in four outings. Near half time Coleshill went close to increasing their lead, when Shaw found Hanlon on the left, who turned the ball inside to Nabbs. He beat two defenders and chipped on to Holder, but the final shot went wide. King saved Coleshill with a smart clearance from Sealey at the start of the second half, but it was young Shaw who stole the limelight, when he took a pass from Phelps in his stride and fired in a first time shot, only for the ball to rebound off keeper Hyland. In the 75th minute a corner taken by Holder was dropped by Hyland and Phelps cracked the ball against the crossbar. Racing tried hard to get back in the running, but Coleshill thwarted their efforts with a determined team effort.
