Town Good Value For A Share Of The Spoils
Without three key players, Coleshill did well to share the spoils with old rivals, Whitmore. But they left it late, Phil Dunn grabbing an equaliser with only 10 minutes remaining. From the kick off Coleshill went straight on the attack, playing some attractive football, and Phil Dunn went close on a couple of occasions. But Whitmore soon settled and forced the first corner after a quarter of an hour, only to see it cleared by a solid Town defence in which Geoff Statham was outstanding. Coleshill hit back and John Bown hammered a shot goalward which just dipped over the bar. Clive Lyons, playing well in midfield, pinpointed a centre into a crowded Whitmore area, but Dunn heade inches over. Town seemed to relax just before the interval as the Old Boys applied pressure, but at half-time there was no score. Whitmore came closest to breaking the deadlock in the second half, but Garnell made a great diving save at the feet of Thorpe. Then the keeper had to look lively to make another save from the same player, pushing his power-packed shot round the post for a corner. Deeming lost the ball on Coleshill’s bye-line to Thorpe whose cross found the unmarked Pickerill and Garnell was given no chance as Whitmore took the lead. Since the resumption, Lyons had been struggling to find his first half form and was replaced by Mick Hanlon. Roy Phelps started the move which brought Town’s equaliser. From midfield, he sent Eddie Hanlon wide down the left flank and from his centre Phelps blasted a 10-yard shot which keeper Baldwin did well to stop. But the rebound fell straight to Phil Dunn, who made no mistake and earned his side a vital point. On balance, without Whillock, Allen and Owen, Coleshill played some fine soccer and were good value for a point.
