Shot-Shy Town Have Lucky Escape
Coleshill were lucky to escape with a point. The previous week, Boldmere had been trounced 6-0 by Albion Haden United, but at the Memorial Park, on Saturday, they were a much improved side who gave Coleshill quite a scare. Rarely has the Town defence been in such a tangle as it was against the eager “Mikes” raiders, for whom ex-Coleshill player, Don Jones, had a great game. With a shaky defence, Coleshill also lacked cohesion in midfield and thrust up front. On this performance, it is hard to picture Coleshill getting any honours this campaign. Coleshill left out Hanlon to make way for David Wheeler, signed mid-week from Sutton Town. Both sides were guilty of slack play during the opening stages, but Boldmere settled down and looked the more composed side as the match progressed. Jones was a constant worry to Town’s defence, and for once, Les Owen, Coleshill’s “Mr Reliable”, had an “Off Day”. Coleshill went on the attack and were awarded a penalty when Mikes full back, Evans, handled the ball thinking it had gone out of play. However, Steve McLindoe made a brilliant save from Phelps’ spot kick and pushed the rebound away for a corner. Coleshill scrambled the ball in the net from a corner but the score was disallowed for pushing the keeper. After half an hour, Boldmere took a deserved when Owen, jumping with Cockbill, handled in the box and Hughes scored with ease from the penalty. Apart from the missed penalty, McLindoe in the Boldmere goal, was never troubled by the shot-shy Town forwards, who were denied possession by mediocre midfield play. Coleshill started more brightly after the interval and forced a couple of quick corners, but Boldmere cleared easily and hit back with neat counter-attacks. A Geoff Statham free kick proved fruitless, and Wheeler, with only McLindoe to beat, shot straight into the keepers arms. But eventually Town did get an equaliser, when Owen made amends for his handling lapse by heading Dunn’s corner into the roof of the net. Coleshill substituted Masters for Wheeler and for the first time, Boldmere’s defence knew they had a game on their hands as the replacement had a good header scrambled off the line. But again Boldmere countered well. From a Hughes free kick, Deeming found himself confronted by three unmarked “Mikes” raiders and Wallace hit a tremendous shot to restore the visitors lead. The lead was short-lived however, for Coleshill were back on level terms within a minute, when Garnell nodded a Hannan corner down to Lyons, who smashed the ball home. Garnell had a great run down the flank and Masters did well with a few solo efforts but Coleshill never looked like scoring and Boldmere were surprised at the ease with which they too a point.
