Coleshill Town Outplay Hurley

Coleshill, last season’s beaten finalists, outplayed Hurley for long periods, but the Sutton Premier Division side were never disgraced by their senior opponents. For the third successive week, Town’s finishing was poor. With Oscar Deeming injured and new signing Bown not eligible, the homesters introduced left back Roger Coxall for his first match of the season, while Eddie Hanlon returned to the left wing. Both had good matches, the later sending over a stream of accurate crosses. The game opened in sensational fashion, for Peter Garnell headed goalwards from a Hanlon corner andfull back Peckover cleared off the line, the ball going straight to goalkeeper Fraser. Clive Lyons, Roy Phelps and Scott Coleman established midfield superiority for Coleshill, the former being particularly impressive. Constantly under pressure, Hurley had eight men in defence and relied on long passes in their efforts to attack. From one breakaway, Cooper went close to scoring but Les Owen and Geoff Statham were dominant in Town’s rearguard. Right back Paul Hannan also played well and keeper John Comley was seldom in action. Phil Dunn, challenged by Fraser, shot just over the cross-bar for Coleshill, who took the lead after 24 minutes. Coleman pushed the ball forward and Garnell shook off two defenders to fire home. Hanlon, playing at his best, had two successive shots cleared off the line. Town excelled with fine football, despite the slippery pitch, but chnaces were missed. Two minutes after the interval, Fraser brought off a magnificent save from Garnell, but the ball rebounded for Dunn to score a second goal. The onslaught continued but Town’s shooting was well off target. Fraser displayed great ability in goal, while further shots were blocked, but more steadiness by their strikers would have brought Coleshill a bigger victory.
