Coleshill Town made hard work of claiming victory against bottom-of-the-table Quarry Bank Celtic, at the Memorial Park on Saturday. The visitors would have lost by a far larger margin had Town’s finishing been better. With newcomer John Bown, from Dosthill Rovers, playing a useful game in midfield, Coleshill moved Scott Coleman up front and he immediately found the new role to his liking. Accepting a pass from Roy Phelps, Coleman placed the ball past advancing goalkeeper Green, to put Town 1-0 ahead after only 25 seconds.Celtic were forced to withstand pressure, with Green and defenders Stanier and Harris outstanding. Haden prompted occasional attacks for Bank, but Geoff Statham and Les Owen dominated in the middle of the back four for Coleshill, who did not concede a corner in the entire match. After 20 minutes, Phil Dunn should have increased Town’s lead. With an open goal before him, he merely rolled the ball towards the empty net and right back Yardley was on hand to clear the danger. Then Green made two fine saves from Phelps. Shots from Clive Lyons and Phelps hit the woodwork as defender Oscar Deeming prompted attacks and another effort from Pete Garnell went just over the crossbar. For a brief period after the interval, Celtic strove to make an impression, but it was not long before Town regained the initiative and custodian Green was constantly in action. Coleshill’s right back Paul Hannan over-lapped well, but his colleagues were unable to take advantage of many good centres. Midway through the half, Celtic again fought spiritedly inspired by Haden, but Green excelled with a great save from Statham’s free kick. Town continued to squander chances, but in the 78th minute they went further ahead. Coleman made a precision pass to Phelps, who had little difficulty in scoring. Five minutes later, tragedy struck Coleshill. In clearing a Quarry Bank attack, Deeming sustained an injury and subsequently X-rays showed that he had a deadened nerve in his leg and bad bruising.
