Coleshill Town Pin Faith In Their Regulars
Reigning Champions od the Midland Combination Division Two, Coleshill Town, resume business on Saturday, August 15th with a Home fixture against newcomers Astwood Bank Rovers, while on the following Tuesday night they entertain another new club, Mile Oak Rovers. Coleshill are pinning their faith on the old brigade and have made only one pre-season signing - he is Malcolm Stokes, who hit the forefront of local soccer when representing the Sutton A.F.L. and was later signed by Sutton Town. Last season he figured with Boldmere St Michaels and was leading scorer for the Sutton Sunday League, Premier Division Champions, Park Royal. Malcolm, at the age of 21, is best suited to leading the attack, and while not blessed with the robust build of Town's former sharp shooter, Harry Stokes, he will be a headache for opposing defenders. Last season the Town rattled in 134 league goals and it will be interesting to see if Stokes can better the leading marksman Colin Davis's total of 33 who finished just one ahead of Town's veteran marksman, Roy Sanders. Secretary Lewis Wathen said the the club would endevour to ride the forthcoming season with a playing staff numbering around 15. "It is unfair to sign on a large string of players when they are worthy of playing football every week." he said. Last week Coleshill entertained Boldmere St Michaels in a pre-season friendly and after trailing 3-0 finished all square at 4-4. Former Town player Martin Curtis figured in the match and after giving a sound display hope are high that he will sign on the dotted line - "Butch" Bradley has come back to live in Coleshill and re-sign. In the game against Boldmere, Town penalty king Roy Phelps proved he had not lost his spot power by scoring two goals. Eddie Hanlon and Trialist Ray Coton adding the remainder. Bobby Hope, the former Chelmsley Town player, hit a hat-trick for the Mikes.

Coleshill Town To Make An Even More Determined Effort For Success
Although disappointed at not gaining election to Division One of the Midland Football Combination, Coleshill Town are to make an even more determined effort for success during the 1970-71 campaign, that they did last season, when they won the Second Division by a convincing margin. All the players who helped Coleshill to success, last year, will be on view again and Town have also signed former Sutton Town and Boldmere St Michaels striker Malcolm Stokes. Enthusiasm throughout the club has never been better and regular training has taken place under the experienced eye of ex Walsall player Tim Rawlings (One of only Two players born in Coleshill to make it into the professional game). Several pre-season practice matches have been arranged. Coleshill, who last year scored 134 goals in 46 league and cup games, will again by relying on their main trio of strikers, Colin Davis, Roy Sanders and Roy Phelps, to carry them forward to new glories. In the 1969-70 campaign, Davis scored 33 goals, while Sanders notched 32 and Phelps netted 27. With the addition of Stokes to the forward line, Coleshill could have one of the most formidable attacks in the division. Town's strong defence should be well marshalled by twin centre halves Geoff Statham and Tony Seddon, while right back Keith Midgely and goalkeeper Peter Garnell will both prove difficult to beat, if they maintain previous form. Other members of the team who should give impressive performances will be defenders Clive Lyons, Steve Ward and Dave Back, midfield man Tony Thane, skipper Oscar Deeming and winger Eddie Hanlon. The entire squad will be all out to emulate last season's performance and unless there is an appreciable loss of form, Coleshill Town could set the pace in 1970-71.

Coleshill Held To A Draw
Coleshill Town, Champions of the Midland Combination Second Division last season, were forced to field a weakened side for Saturday's opening game against Astwood Bank and as a result were held to a goalless draw. Having come through a hefty pre-season practise match programme with "flying colours", which included a clear cut victory over Atherstone Town, Coleshill were in high spirits to leave their previous opening match form far back, but when regulars Seddon, Ward, Sanders and Back were not available for selection, Astwood Banks hopes of evading defeat were made much brighter. Tony Thane was written off with an injury and while also nursing a shoulder injury, Town's veteran Oscar Deeming was plunged into the make-shift outfit and came out with top honours. The visitors supported by several ex-Alcester Town players made their intentions very obvious straight from the opening whistle by playing four men at the back, four in midfield, to leave their attack only double pronged. This resulted in keeper Garnell being little more than a spectator in what proved to be a very "long yawn." Coleshill were thus left to "bash" away at the visitors heavily packed rearguard and as the final result shows, without success, thanks mainly to the "big boot" efforts of Gough, Richardson, Bayliss and company. Coleshill managed a couple of goal scoring chances in the first half - Davis having bad luck when he headed a Deeming centre speeding for the net only to see the ball strike the post - Stokes hammering the rebound over the top. Coleshill put a little more life and purpose into the proceedings on resuming but it was sad to see nobody efficient enough to stamp authority in midfield and Astwood defenders thus found themselves with ample time to dispense with awkward situations. Geoff Statham was the only player on view who lived up to form - he was in extreme command at all times and found colleague and ex-player Martin Curtis always willing to share responsibilities. The trouble lay directly up front where the Town's forwards failed time and time again to break down the visitors stronghold - Ingram in goal was not idle, but his charge never really looked in danger of failing. The only worthwhile shot that came in this "tiresome" half was piloted by Phelps - his flashing drive, on the turn, saw the ball travel inches wide with Ingram nowhere. Thus it was that Coleshill with yet another dissapointing display on the opening day of a new season, must re-produce quickly the brand of football that carried them to the championship - they have done it and can still do it - we can only wait and see.
