MATCH REPORT
Coleshill had one of their best performances back in August with a 3-0 win at Sutton, but they surpassed that in this game with probably the best performance of the season.
After a disappointing defeat away to Bedworth Coleshill were determined to put things right and took the game to Sutton from the start. Sutton have a young side and play some lovely football but lack the most important part, goals! It was a very entertaining game in front of a healthy crowd, former Coleman Rhys Hilton pulling all the strings for the visitors, and was instrumental in Sutton almost taking an early lead but the Town defence got several blocks in. An Alex Tomkinson cross was headed goalward by Ewan Williams but the effort was saved on the line. Coleshill took the lead on 23 minutes when a Tomkinson corner kick was power headed home by Amarvir Sandhu, Coleshill's 50th goal of the season. The Royals hit back with another fine move, involving Hilton again, but Sawyer shot just wide of the near post. As half time approached Coleshill were in the ascendancy but Sutton were playing well, so still a threat.

The second half maintained the Coleshill momentum and almost stretched their lead in the first few minutes as an Alex Tomkinson shot hit the base of the post. George Washbourne had a run and shot sail over the bar before Coleshill's second goal on 56 minutes. The Colemen were awarded a free kick ten yards outside the box and the delivery from Liam Molesworth was perfect for the leaping Taylor Carter-Byrne who powered a header home from 10 yards out. A fine penetratingly run by Amarvir Sandhu found Liam Molesworth in the box and his shot looked to be another goal but for a fine save by Brown in the visitors goal. But the third goal came soon after on 67 minutes when another fine piece of work by Tomkinson got him to the bye line and his cut back was met by Ewan Williams who swept the ball home for his first League goal for the club. Although the visitors had plenty of possession the final ball was lacking, with Home keeper Paul Hathaway having a very quiet afternoon, but with seconds to go a free kick by Collins was heading in but Niall Rowe cleared off the line.

So, a fine performance against Stamford, a poor game against Bedworth, then a Five Star showing against Sutton? Which team will show up next game away to Gresley Rovers?

Mark Sanders reports as the Royals start 2023 with a loss to local rivals Coleshill
Sutton travelled for the first game of 2023 to take on neighbours Coleshill Town. They were looking to avenge their 3-0 drubbing at home by them earlier in the season, and to take their unbeaten run to three games and gain some sort of momentum this season.

Stringers starting eleven were as follows: Brown, Sawyer, Armitage, Maphosa, Beresford, Zito, Dampha, Collins, Hendrie, Hilton and Mills.

It was a slow start from Sutton with Coleshill on the ascendancy in the early exchanges. Sutton’s first chance came on 16 minutes with a great run by Armitage down the wing, and after outfoxing the defender he pulled the ball back across goal, but the shot was blocked by a well-organized defence.

23 minutes in and the pressure on Sutton told, as a corner from Coleshill saw Sandu rise just above Bez to head into the top left corner. 1-0 Coleshill.

Hilton went on a superb run, cutting through the defence like a hot knife through butter. His final ball to Sawyer was good, but the effort was wide of the near post.

Dampha was central to the goal and was crowded out by the Coleshill defence, but he managed to get the ball out to Hilton who shot between the defender’s legs. It took the pace off the ball and made an easy save for the Coleshill keeper.

The first half ended 1-0 to Coleshill, with it all to do in the second half for The Royals.

Sutton tried to get going in the second half, but the Coleshill defence was strong and won everything in their half.

Coleshill hit the foot of the post with a shot from Tomkinson after beating two players.

Coleshill soon increased their lead following a free kick by Molesworth. A header from Byrne flew across goal and into the bottom right. 2-0 Coleshill.

Sandu went on a glorious run and fed Molesworth whose shot was well saved by Brown to keep the score 2-0.

Hendrie was replaced by Sutherland on the hour mark, and two minutes later Mills was replaced by Adegbola.

On 67 mins, a misplaced pass by Zito went straight to Washbourne. He put a through ball to Tomkinson, who got to the bye line and delivered a ball into the box for Williams to slot home. 3-0 Coleshill Town.

On 70 minutes Zito was replaced by Ellis.

Sutherland had an effort from distance that went well wide and then had another opportunity from a corner. Unfortunately, the ball got stuck between his feet, and before he could shoot, it gave the keeper enough time to clear the danger.

Sutton never really got going in this game, and were out muscled for large parts of it. All credit to Coleshill though, who were dominant from start to finish. It’s back to the drawing board for Stringer with another derby game on Saturday against Chasetown.
