THE NON LEAGUE PAPER WROTE
Coleshill had a disappointing start to the new year despite doing enough in the first half to win the game. All three goals came from scrambles in the box that should have been cleared. Coleshill took the lead when the second of two consecutive corners was swept in by Taylor Carter-Byrne after 32 minutes. Just before half time a long throw into the box caused chaos and Isai Marselia who found the net to level. Sutton upped their game in the second half and had better possession and took the lead on 59 minutes from another corner, another scramble and Jonathan Letford pounced on a loose ball and swept home. Coleshill tried to get back into the game but Sutton dealt with everything the Colemen threw at them.
Star Man: Isai Marselia. (Sutton).

A SUTTON MATCH REPORT
BY ALEXANDER MOLONEY
Mark Sanders reports as the Royals get off to a flying start to the New Year with a crucial victory at Pack Meadow.
After a wonderful performance against promotion chasing Halesowen last weekend, it was another clash with one of the top five clubs in the division in the form of Coleshill Town. They had already taken three points from Coles Lane earlier in the season, and Sutton were looking to return the favour. Thorpe’s side for this New Year derby class was: Gwilliams, Christophorou, Eden, Burgess, Redfern, Beresford, Dodd, Woodall, Brown, Marselia and Letford. Sutton looked bright, and went on the attack from the off as they won a free kick just wide of the goal. Marselia stepped up to strike, but the effort rebounded off the Coleshill defence straight to Eden. He hit a curling shot just over the bar, and Sutton were showing their intentions from the off. Marselia was again in the thick of the action moments later. He ran in on to a forward pass as the keeper and defender got in each other’s way. It allowed a soft shot to go through, only for another defender to get back to clear the ball and stop it crossing the line. Woodall threaded a delightful ball for Brown to run onto, but as he cut inside the defender he was pulled back for offside. Sutton were pressing well, playing high up the pitch, and causing Coleshill problems. Just before the half hour mark, an injury to Woodall forced an early substitution. Njong came on to replace Woodall. Straight after the change and against the run of play, Coleshill went in front as a ball in the box from a corner wasn’t effectively cleared. Carter-Byrne was in the right place unmarked to slot past Gwilliams. 1-0 Coleshill.
Sutton tried to get back into the game from a corner, and Beresford almost took the chance with a trademark bullet header that flew just over the crossbar. Brown, with some great link up play with Marselia, allowed Marselia to get a shot in. It curled, but had lack of power and was easy for Hathaway to gather up safely. Dodd tried an effort from distance but again Hathaway was equal to it. Sutton, although behind, had not dropped their intensity going forward. Just before half time they got their desserts. A throw in from Brown delivered a ball into the box, it bounced a couple of times and Marselia was first to react and fire into the roof of the net to bring the scores level at half time. 1-1.
Sutton had the first attack of the second half as Letford’s shot took a deflection just past the post. It gifted Sutton the first corner of the second half. Marselia crossed over to set Brown up with a volley which went just over the crossbar. On 59 minutes Njong came off the field to be replaced by King-Harmes. 62 minutes on the board and a corner for Sutton produced dividends. Burgess delivered a ball into the box which was not dealt with, it allowed Letford at the back post to slot home from 6 yards. 1-2 Sutton. Letford almost got a second moments later, when another corner came into the box at pace and just sliced his forehead, but with no direction the ball flew passed the goal. Letford, in buoyant mood from his goal, ran into the box holding off two defenders and managed to get a shot off, but a slight deflection gave Sutton another corner. 70 minutes in and Brown was replaced by Niven. Niven got straight into the action and tried his luck from 20 yards out. The ball which he struck beautifully, cannoned off the upright to leave Sutton disappointed they hadn’t killed the game off. Right before full time, Gwilliams pulled off a match winning save. Nugent, who had only just come on for Coleshill, hit a shot which Gwilliams saved by diving to his right, guaranteeing the three points for Sutton.
It had been a hard-fought match, where Sutton had had the better of the play and finally had the result to go with it. A new year and a new start for Sutton, the only way is up now and with Corby next Saturday, you know you are in for a good game and a good chance to get another three points in the board.
