TOWN FALL AGAIN IN WALSALL SENIOR CUP

After the disappointing defeat to Spalding the previous Saturday, CTFC hosted Rushall Olympic under the floodlights at Pack Meadow but failed to produce the recent good form that took them to four straight league wins. The lights certainly didn’t shine on the Colemen who battled it out against a well matched Southern League Premier side, but missed a second half penalty before conceding the only goal of the match late on.

On a very cold and damp Monday night both teams struggled to dominate the midfield and get meaningful possession in each others penalty areas, with the result that there were few real chances to score in the entire half. New front pairing Philips and Moore combined well on several occasions but early shots went wide or were directed straight at Pics keeper Palmer. Likewise Town were unable to capitalise on dead ball situations, a free kick won by Willis on 30 yards taken by Philips caught easily by Palmer, with a second taken by Hathaway headed forward by Moore producing the same result.

After 20 minutes the away side enjoyed a period of good possession in midfield during which Coleshill defended adequately. After a good build up from the back involving Masidi and Coyle, a cross from Steele was headed down by Masidi but the resulting shot from Mitchell went wide of Hathaway’s right hand post for a goal kick.
A Rushall pass back was nearly intercepted by Moore, and the home teams’s defence had to stay focussed when on the receiving end of Parry’s long throws into the box. The hard working Molesworth chased everything down but Coleshill were unable to convert the resulting possession into chances. Another free kick, won by Moore on 25mins , was taken by Doyle but his effort hit the away side’s wall. A superb pass from Whittall straight down the middle threatened to give Parry a good goal scoring opportunity but he was denied by Hendrickson’s strong tackle . Ofori had several good runs at the Coleshill defence that produced shots off target. The home team failed to achieve any meaningful penetration down either flank so few crosses into the box were made. A final flurry before the break saw good work by Doyle and Philips produce shots from Molesworth (parried by the keeper) and Donnelly ( saved comfortably by the keeper) saw a very even first half come to an end.

Half time Score :- Coleshill Town 0 Rushall Olympic 0

After the break a more determined away side put pressure on the Colemen who sat back and a conceded a free kick just outside the left of the box. Green’s low shot appeared to go straight through the Town defence and was turned in on the line by Coyle. Fortunately for Coleshill the linesperson flagged the effort off side. Coleshill relieved the pressure with a corner won by Molesworth but Doyles’ kick was easily defended. After 55 minutes Moore hit the bar after good combinations by Molesworth and Philips. The Pics then made three substitutions on 60 minutes with Glover, Batchelor and Reid replacing Ofori, Coyle and Steele. Palmer cleared a shot by Glover off the line following a corner by Lyttle. On 68 minutes Moore and Philips were replaced by Dainty and Sandhu for Coleshill.

This set up the two most significant events of the game. First, after 75 minutes, manager Stuart’s substitutions appeared to have paid off as Sandu made a great run down the left wing, and evaded two strong tackles just outside the box. He retained possession and drifted past Clarke whose mistimed tackle felled the winger gaining a penalty for the home side. Unfortunately Molesworth attempted to place the ball to the keeper’s right but Palmer guessed correctly and parried the ball away to be cleared away from danger. Then after 80 minutes Rushall gained a corner, taken by Whittall. Batchelor leapt to get a free header giving Hathaway no chance. One nil to the Pics. A shot by scorer Batchelor was turned away at the right hand post by Hathway who punched away the subsequent corner. Despite efforts by Coleshill get into the danger area Rushall were able to see out the match without further incident.

Referee: Mr Mr Scott. Above Average.

THE PICS prevailed in the Walsall Senior Cup with a 1-0 win at Coleshill Town on a chilly evening.
The game got off to a slow start with neither team able to grab a hold of proceedings.
As the opening period went on, Chekaine Steele started causing problems out wide as we enjoyed the majority of the possession.
The closest we came was when Tyrone Ofori’s low strike flashed just past the post from a tight angle.
On the stroke of half-time, Tom Palmer was called into action with a fine double save as we went in goalless at the break.
The second half saw chances continue to be at a premium. We did have the ball in the back of the net when Tyler Lyttle’s free-kick took a touch off Kristian Green on its way in but the offside flag ruled it out.
After rattling the woodwork, our hosts won a penalty when Sandhu was brought down. Molesworth stepped up and saw his spot-kick tipped over by Palmer.
We made the home side pay when we finally made the breakthrough when Richard Batchelor rose like a salmon to head home an inviting cross from Lyttle.
It was to prove to be the winning goal as we made it through to the next round.
