MATCH REPORT

Coleshill travelled to Derbyshire on a Tuesday night with rain pretty much constant throughout the day. Belper have been in the NPL for a long time and their facilities are second to none. Lovely stadium, good size club house, Directors room and Sponsors room, electric scoreboard, the lot and despite the rain the pitch was in magnificent condition.
A couple of games ago Coleshill had to endure an aerial bombardment from Long Eaton and this game was very similar but a level above. Maybe Coleshill learned something from Long Eaton as they stood up to the attack, backs against the wall for long periods, and then took advantage when they had the opportunity to get the ball down and play, and on the night they had a lot of luck and a magnificent goalkeeper. It brings to mind a quote from that great manager Brian Clough, "If God had wanted us to play football in the clouds, he'd have put grass up there."

The home team started at a pace and could have had the game wrapped up in the first few minutes. In the very first attack Peterson headed for goal and time appeared to stand still as everyone expected the ball to hit the back of the net but it sailed JUST past the post. Peterson had a shot that Town keeper Paul Hathaway didn't dare try to hold on the slippery surface so pushed away for a corner and in a goalmouth melee the ball was hacked off the line by an overworked Coleshill defence. Yellow cards started to appear at regular intervals, Bertram for the home side and Amarvir Sandhu for the Colemen. Coleshill ever so slowly started to work themselves into the game but the aerial threat was still there as Peterson headed a corner over the bar. On 30 minutes Town took the lead with their first meaningful attack. Josh Mansell's cross finding Kai Tongue on the far post and he bent a shot back across goal and into the far corner of the net past the hand of the diving home keeper Battersby. This stunned the home team and crowd as it had been all The Nailers so far. A home free kick was headed back and forth with Hathaway coming off his line to punch clear as Belper continued the onslaught but just before the break Coleshill broke away again and Joe Phillips was brought down on the six yard line just as he was about to shoot, penalty but no sign of a card for the defender. A 2-0 score line would have really put Coleshill in the driving seat but the normally dependable Kai Tonge was denied as Battersby flung himself across goal to save the spot kick.
Half Time Belper 0-1 Coleshill

The second half continued in the same vein as Josh Mansell headed a goalbound effort clear and Paul Hathaway saved a Wilson header from a corner on the line. Another corner and another header hit the side netting then the save of the match as a Peterson header was pushed away for yet another corner with Hathaway at full stretch. Coleshill were getting battered but were holding on and when Joe Phillips and Sam Moore were replaced by James Harrison and George Washbourne the fresh legs gave Coleshill a lift as they had more time on the ball. The home team pushed and pushed, Margetts went down in the box expecting a penalty but got nothing, and South, normally a defender but pushed up into attack, headed wide. On 75 minutes James Harrison did really well to gain control and release Kai Tongue for a rare run at goal. At this stage the Coleshill following were expecting Tongue to take the ball into the corner to waste time but the striker got to the bye line, Cruyff turned his marker leaving him for dead, looked up and casually chipped the ball, left footed, over the keeper and into the far corner of the net. To say the Home contingent were stunned would be an understatement! 2-0 with 15 minutes to go! The stuffing was knocked out of the home team but they kept plugging away. Hathaway punched away an excellent cross in a packed six yard box and Litchfield shot straight at Hathaway. The last action was a mass brawl as tempers flared but amazingly no cards were shown.

A very strange game. Coleshill could have lost by a cricket score but held firm under immense pressure and scored two fine goals by playing neat and tidy football.

Up to second in the League, unbeaten in Five away games without conceding a goal. Onward and upward with Yaxley the visitors an Saturday at Pack Meadow.

NAILERS SUFFER FIRST HOME DEFEAT AT THE HANDS OF COLESHILL
BY DAVID LAUGHLIN

Belper had looked to transform the Raygar stadium into a fortress this season with the Nailers yet to lose at home since all the way back in October 2019, (with a little help from a few lock downs here and there).(writes Ethan Thatcher)
The Nailers started full of energy and were unfortunate not to find themselves ahead in the opening minute of the game.

A trademark Craig Nelthorpe cross found Jonathon Margetts free in the centre of the box, only for the striker to glance his header narrowly wide of the target.

Belper continued to dominate the early periods of the game and were unlucky not to find themselves several goals up in the opening half hour.

Alex Peterson came closest for the hosts in the 25th minute after a pinpoint cross from Nelthorpe fell straight onto the striker’s head four yards out from goal, however he could only head his chance over the bar.

In the 30th minute the game was flipped on its head when Kai Tonge curled a loose ball from the edge of the area into the far right corner of the goal, with a small bounce over Ollie Battersby’s hand being enough to beat the keeper.

Tonge was soon given an opportunity to double his goal tally for the day after the Colemen broke quickly from a Belper corner.

This resulted in the Nailers being short for numbers at the back and Tom Wilson giving away a dubious penalty. The goalscorer stepped up, but Battersby made a superb stop down to his left to deny the winger.

Belper started the second half in the same dominant fashion they ended the first.

Paul Hathaway had a sensational game in the Coleshill goal and denied Belper time and time again.

The Nailers had so many set pieces they had to start getting creative. That’s exactly what happened in the 58th minute after a short corner found Nelthorpe with some space to produce a deep cross which met Tom Wilson at the back post, unfortunately for him the keeper sprung into life and managed to catch his powerful header.

The hosts had to do something special to break down the stubborn Coleshill defence, so they made several changes in the hope of a goal.

Substitute Nathan Curtis was so nearly the man to make the difference after he produced a sensational deep cross from the right wing which found Peterson in the middle of the box; but again the keeper was equal to it and pushed the ball away.

The game was put to bed in the 75th minute when Tonge produced a moment of magic to undo all of Belper’s hard work.

The winger picked up the ball deep on the right flank, he managed to beat a man, cut onto his left foot and smash the ball into the top left corner leaving the keeper helpless.

In the 90th minute tempers flared after Corey Gregory was forced to the ground yet it was not deemed a foul and in fact was given the other way.

As a result things started to kick off between both set of players and that just about summed up Belper’s night. Frustrating.
