Coleshill Town 1 v 1 Highgate United

Postby Alan Beckett » Sat Apr 30, 2005 5:16 pm

Saturday 30th April 2005
Midland Combination Premier Division
Coleshill Town 1 v 1 Highgate United
Scorer: Kevin Wagstaff.

Steve Lees returned after a six game absence but not in his customery centre back role but as an emergency goalkeeper as all other 1st or Youth team stoppers were either injured or unavailable. Manager Mick Beadle was also without joint leading scorer Craig Davies (suspended) and centre backs Frank Woodburn (injured) and Alan Wright (work commitments).
The game had an end of season look about it as both teams had little to play for other than pride. A fairly even first half saw little goalmouth action but the visitors took the lead on 16 minutes through Leon Reid. Danny Carter saw a lob go just over the bar and a James Lloyd shot went just past the post. Coleshill enjoyed the majority of possession but their small, light weight attack got little change from Highgate's defence.

In the second half Coleshill pushed for an equaliser but nothing was going their way and a 1-0 defeat looked the likeliest outcome. Danny Carter hit the post early in the second half, and James Lloyd nearly got on the end of a dangerous Stuart Howard cross. Another Lloyd shot was saved at the foot of the post. A deep corner found Mitchell Thompson and his volley was saved by the keeper's feet, the ball bounced up hit the post and rebounded back into the keepers arms. Danny Carter had several chances to edge above Craig Davies in the goalscoring charts but he was out of luck especially when in a one on one with the keeper, he stabbed his shot wide. With time running out the Referee, the same one who sent off Davies in the last home game, booked several Highgate players, unfortunately for them one was for the second time and they were down to ten men. Within minutes Coleshill finally found their way through the visitors rear guard to level on 87 minutes. A deep Stuart Howard cross was headed down by Lee Dempster and Kevin Wagstaff stabbed home from 15 yards out. In the last minute Danny Carter again got clear and as he appeared to go past the keeper he went down in a heap but no penalty was given. It was difficult to see at the far end but Danny Carter never goes down, much to his managers frustration, and he was livid at the decision. In time added on Carters shot was blocked and Highgate broke quickly. Reid went clear of his marker but Town's new last line of defence Steve Lees held his nerve and saved the goalbound effort.

Team:- Steve Lees, Matt Ward, Des Wilkes (Chris Gee), Josh McPherson, Stuart Howard, Tim Lane, Carl Smith, Kevin Wagstaff, Danny Carter, Mitchell Thompson, James Lloyd (Lee Dempster). Sub not used Alan Wright.
