Coleshill Town 1 v 2 Nuneaton Griff

Postby Alan Beckett » Thu Sep 09, 2004 11:53 am

MIDLAND COMBINATION PREMIER DIVISION
SATURDAY 4th SEPTEMBER 2004
COLESHILL TOWN 1 V 2 NUNEATON GRIFF
Scorer: Dean Farrington.

In the programme notes it was mentioned that although Nuneaton Griff had lost all of their opening four games, we rarely do well against them and had to be at our best to continue the recent impressive run. Well, we weren't at our best, but should still have won this game in the first twenty minutes. As it was Griff slowly gained in confidence as the game went on and somehow managed to grab all three points, with their keeper head and shoulders above the rest in the man of the match award.
All looked fine when Dean Farrington finished off a sweet move with a swerving shot into the top corner leaving the keeper well beaten, but chances came and went with no increase in the score line and as time went on Griff grew in confidence and the inevitable happened when they equalised with a scrambled goal as half time approached.

Pete Hall, Stuart Howard and later Danny Carter all had convertable opportunities but it was Craig Davies who came off the pitch the most frustrated. Coleshill's leading scorer could have bagged five if it had been his day but in three clear runs at goal the visitors keeper came out on top in each one on one. Griff sensed it could be their day and from a free kick the took the lead from another scappy goal. Craig Jones looked favourite to collect the deep, high cross but under challenge the ball dropped at the feet of an attacker. His ball back into the danger area was headed home by Dave Aston with Des Wilkes trying to stop the ball crossing the line with his hand. Luckily the Referee awarded a goal and warned Wilkes as to the consequences had the ball not crossed the line. Even at this late stage Coleshill still had time to win the game but the ball would just not go in the net. Griff are not the side of the last few years and should have been beaten but they rode their luck, worked hard and were finally rewarded with all three points.

Team;- Craig Jones, Matt Ward, James Lloyd, Des Wilkes, Karl Jones, Stuart Howard, Dean Farrington, Carl Smith( Kevin Wagstaff), Craig Davies, Pete Hall (Danny Carter), Mitchell Thompson. Sub not used Steve Lees.
