MATCH REPORT
MIDLAND COMBINATION PREMIER DIVISION
TUESDAY 24th AUGUST
SOUTHAM UNITED 2 V 1 COLESHILL TOWN
Scorer: Craig Davies.

Coleshill only played for the last twenty minutes in which time Craig Davies scored his third of the season, Stuart Howard hit the post and the home keeper made two first class saves to deny Town a point. By that time the visitors were 2-0 down and with better finishing, the home team could easily have doubled that advantage.

Manager Mick Beadle kept an unchanged team following the 3-0 success over Brocton but came up a determined Southam team who are a much better outfit than they have been for the last couple of seasons. United started the brighter of the two teams and created much the better openings but fortunately for Coleshill most of those chances fell to the big No 10 who failed to find the target time and again. Town?s front two of Davies and Carter were feeding on scraps, as the home team?s defence looked a solid unit with Ade Wyatt particularly impressing. Danny Carter?s quick feet almost created a couple of openings but the ball would not fall for him. Coleshill seemed to have weathered the storm but on 36 minutes ex Wellesbourne player and Southam captain ran deep from midfield and confidently lifted the ball over the advancing Jones in the Coleshill goal for the opener. Within 60 seconds of the restart Southam made it two as Town?s defence was caught napping, Dean Burrows bundling home a cross from the left. Young James Lloyd came on for Dean Farrington and his exuberance seemed to lift a deflated Coleshill as they finally started to show what they are capable of. Suddenly Coleshill were creating chances which looked unlikely in the first 70 minutes. Falconbridge, Davies and Howard all had efforts before Matt Ward cleverly created space down the right, his cross was dummied by Carter to leave Craig Davies clear on goal and he made no mistake as his drive powered into the centre of the net. Coleshill upped the tempo and McPhearson shot then headed just wide. Ward shot over after probably the best move of the game involving Howard, Wagstaff and Davies. In what was now a rare break away Southam should have finished the job as No 10 dove full length to head just wide. Back came Coleshill with Stuart Howard hitting the post on 87 minutes, Steve Lees shot over from distance then with seconds left the home keeper finger tipped a goal bound effort from McPhearson over the bar.

Team;- Craig Jones, Matt Ward, Gary Falconbridge, Des Wilkes, Steve Lees, Dean Farrington (James Lloyd), Stuart Howard, Josh McPhearson, Craig Davies, Danny Carter (Pete Hall), Kevin Wagstaff. Sub not used Carl Smith
