Coleshill Town 4 v 2 Massey Ferguson

Postby Alan Beckett » Wed Nov 20, 2002 5:49 pm

SATURDAY 9th NOVEMBER 2002
MIDLAND COMBINATION PREMIER DIVISION
COLESHILL TOWN 4 V 2 MASSEY FERGUSON

Scorers: James Connor 2, Matty Devine (pen), Lee Dempster.

Tony Gormley couldn't have wished for a harder baptism of fire on his first game in charge than the visit of Massey Ferguson, as the Coventry based side are one of the form teams in the league, undefeated in the last ten games and matches between the two sides are always keenly contested. However, Gormley had an ace up the sleeve in striker James Connor who makes a habit of scoring against Massey. In the last encounter back in April last term, Connor scored a glorious hat trick and followed up this time with a fine brace.

Coleshill were without Mitchell Thompson, Frank Woodburn, Chris Kavanaugh and Duwayan Mardenborough due to work commitments but the biggest loss and disappointment are the players leaving to join the old management at Kings Heath. Keeper Greg Allen had already left with Dave Wilson and Mark Hawthorne signing transfer forms immediately after the game. Manager Gormley is hoping to persuade the majority to stop but it is inevitable that some will follow their old manager and the next few weeks will be difficult with many faces coming and going.

The game itself was a fine advertisement for the Midland Combination Premier with lots of excitement and end to end football, with a few goals and two sendings off thrown in. Coleshill took the lead on 19minutes when Dave Wilson was upended in the box and Matty ?Dipper? Devine scored from the spot, for his third in as many games. Both keepers made some fine saves to keep the score down as both sides created chance after chance. On the stroke of half time Stuart Howard was booked after a scuffle with his marker but the feud continued and it came as no surprise when both players were sent off early in the second half. On 66minutes Coleshill increased their lead when James Connor scored his first but that was the start of a goal feast. Massey hit back to equalise on 73minutes but Connor got his second and Coleshill's third within a minute. Back came the visitors again this time from the penalty spot to make it 3-2. Coleshill maintained the high tempo and went in search of another goal when a period of possession would have eased the tension. Town?s bold approach was rewarded when substitute Lee Dempster scored with five minutes remaining to finally secure the three points for their new manager.

Team. Darren Bray, Lee O'Brien, Allan Thomas, Matty Devine (Tony Gormley), Simon Bradbury, Mark Hawthorne, Stuart Howard, Christian Crisp, James Connor (Lee Dempster), Mally Powers, Dave Wilson.

Man of the Match;- Christian Crisp.
