Saturday 5th October 2002
Midland Combination Premier Division
Coleshill Town 0 v 0 Highgate United

Coleshill search for some consistent form continued on Saturday with the visit of highflying Highgate United. United are currently having their best season in years following their summer amalgamation with Shirley Town and lie handily placed for a title challenge in third place. Coleshill were without influential centre back Ray Scandrett due to a back injury so Manager Gary Higgins opted for a change in formation and played a 4-4-2 system.

This was to be a very hard battle against two very evenly matched sides with chances few and far between. Mally Powers, making his league debut, almost made an instant impact when he got on the end of a cross but his near post flick hit the post and rolled agonisingly along the line before being cleared. Highgate playing a 3-5-2 system were outnumbering Coleshill in the middle but Town's midfield pairing of Paul Burns and Lee McCarthy worked tirelessly and came away with a great deal of credit. Highgate almost stole the points when an attacker got clear of the defence only for him to be upended by the onrushing home keeper Greg Allen. United called for the stopper to be sent off but the referee only awarded a free kick, explaining that two defenders had got back behind the ball and so Allen was not the last man. Substitute Duwayan Mardenborough rounded the keeper late on but had been driven too wide and was unable to find the net.

That was the extent of the goalmouth action as both sides cancelled each other out but this was a much better performance from Coleshill and Higgins is looking to field the same side on Wednesday away to Kings Heath.

Team: Greg Allen, Glen Simms, Lee O'Brien, Richard Gathercole, Simon Bradbury, Lee McCarthy, Paul Burns, Dave Wilson (Dwayne Mardenborough), Mitchell Thompson, Mally Powers, Chris Kavanaugh (Matty Devine).
Sub not used Tony Gormley.
